Meet at the Brookside Golf Club house, be ready to run at 7 am!

We'll do one lap around the Rose Bowl (3 miles/5k), then join the 10k people for breakfast at the club house.

Ran my usual short hilly run and did it faster than average which was a surprise, very windy out. Didn't go to breakfast but ate a bowl of cereal after, napped then to the gym for an hour.

    Ran 7.03 in 1:04

I got away from my two computer screens of "The Matrix"-like streaming numbers for a ~3.2 mile run in 25:40.  I hope this will be the shortest of them all but the shin splints made a cameo that I wasn't happy about.Yell

5k run this morning was chilly but fun! Allen, David I., Amy, Roberto, and Powtawche were all part of the "less is more" kick off run group!

One lap around the Rose Bowl. Almost took the group in the wrong direction, but fortunately the others were not blind sheep following a confused-but-well-meaning leader...

Will probably be doing another 5k run next Thursday morning, then hopefully will be ready to re-join the big kids. :-)

There's nothing like a brisk, early morning run after not doing any execise for over two weeks.  It was a great wake up call.  The almond roca, cakes, snickers and all other chocolate that I can't keep my hands off of officially came to an end today.  I was already wanting to take one of my "four off days" this morning, but luckily Marvin convinced me otherwise.  THANKS!!!  It's nice to mentally think and feel that "The journey starts here!"

I'm glad to hear yall had a good kick-off to the challenge!  As for me I couldn't figure out which course to run so I decided to make a new one, so I had my wife drop me off at a local park and ran home.  It was great untill the last 3 miles on the shoulder of the highway!  There would be 3 or 4 18 wheelers in a row just blasting a brick wall of air at me.  Not to mention enough carbon monoxide to choke a horse!  In the morning I'm thinking trail run, no cars, trucks or 18 wheelers!

Did a ~3.3 mile run (longer than yesterday by 0.1 - hey it's an improvement!).  The shin splints are here to stay but I had some reassurance halfway through the run.  I remembered what Mr. Steve Mackel had talked about at our last meeting, and decided to quicken my cadence and do more lifting of the feet with the hamstrings.  Well my hamstrings started to announce their existence, and my shin splints nearly disappeared.

This seems to be the perfect month to work on such things since we'll all be running so often.  Pick one thing a day to focus on and see if it comes natrually next time you run.  Let's see if my shin splints completely go away after 26 runs.

Missed inaugural run, but made inaugural breakfast! Yes, a man w/ priorities. :-)

Actually, had the discipline to run at the bowl last night...barely got in the minimum (3.5 miles)...ran fast to get it over with!  8p is just too late for me.

Ran again this a.m., again the RB, ~4 miles.  Woo-hoo...on track!!

Looks like Saturday is going to be a brick!  First in...um...6 months?

I'm not training for anything so my plan is to run a mininum 30 minutes until I feel like doing more.  Started last night with 48 minutes through the neighorhood and this morning for 38 minutes.  I wouldn't have done either run if it wasn't for this challenge. So thanks to Marvin and everyone in the group for the support!

I guess I am going to officially join the 26/30! I was training for a half on Nov. 25 (Seattle) but my training was interrupted by a car accident (got whiplash) followed by a bad cold. So now I will just see how much I can do this month. Ran 3.5 last night in the dark. I prefer mornings, but couldn't get up the morning after Halloween Surprised so waited until after work. Will run my 4 mile loop tonight.

I decided to get my lazy butt out of bed again this morning and went to the gym to get in some "hills" on the tread mill.  I did a whopping 5K and then went to the pool to help remind me what swimming feels like.  Darn goggles kept leaking so I cut my swim short.  At least I did what the task master required for today.

Day 2: Slept too late to run before work so ended up on the treadmill when I got there. I haven't done that in years. Wasn't sure how fast I should set it initially but managed to get going pretty good. Ran 5 miles in 45 minutes. Started slow, ended fast. I would have never run at work today if it wasn't for this commitment. I gave myself no choice and have told everyone I work with for added pressure. It worked. It felt good.Cool

I am worried about running too much too soon. I usually run 3-4 days a week, usually not in a row, for 7-10 miles with hills. I've always been interested in distances and love the challenge of the hills, but I know I can't run that everyday. I'm not sure how much to cut back to on these daily runs and how far the long one should be. I have seen weekly training plans out there and was wondering where I should start.  I want to run a Half in late Jan and a Marathon in late April. Any ideas?    Thanx!

Hi Rocks2000.  Welcome.  I hope your running will be as satisfying for you as it has been for me.  Which event are you training for?  My only suggestion (I'm not a coach) at this point is, if money is a bit of an issue or you just want to save some money, do what I did last year, when I was preparing for my first marathon, I followed the FREE program from Hal Higdon.  He is a well accomplished runner and I felt great following his marathon plan.  He has FREE plans for other distances as well.  His web site is www.halhigdon.com .  I hope it helps you as it did me. Cry (That's me sweating, not crying.)

I'm even following one of his plans this year.  7 miles scheduled for tomorrow and 14 miles on Sunday....YUCK!!!  Yell

Hey rocks,  I see you are also in TX!  How about setting your sights on the half marathon in Austin on 2-17-08?  I've been thinking about that one, but not sure how it will fit into my work scedule.  I'm sure I could get the day off if I want to bad enough though.

As for day 2, I thought I'd be tired after the 6.5 on Thursday but I felt great!  I actually ran it faster (per mile) than I did in my last 5k race.  It really helps to know where you are at on a course!  I was so worked up after the run I decided to head down to our sister city, Lufkin, to pick up a new pair of running shoes!  Can't wait to try them out!

I'd also like to say keep up the good work to eveyone, and welcome the newbies.  I am working on(if I ever remember to bring my memory card) putting a pic on my profile and encourage everyone else to do the same.  Also like Marvin said please fill out your profile with your name and something about yourself.  Yall take care and put in those miles!

DAy 2- This is Marvin, playing administrator again under Joe's name, forgot to relog in as me. Ok it's still nov 2, 11:24pm in SoCal. I had early meeting at work, on the road all day and a planned dinner at my Mom's cross town tonight so after work went home grabed runnining shoes, dirty running shorts still on the floor from yesterday, Tshirt, and drove off.  Got to Mom's said hi dinner ready yet?  not for 30 min she said, I said  great be back in 25, changed and ran around the ol hood.  planned on 25min but stopped at 2.5 mi.  Never would of done that if I did not have to report to yall tonight!  Thanks.  Long group ride tomorrow.  Brick in the off season?  I'll see how motivated i can get. might be the off day.

     2.5mi in 22:00

ps. to margorita first way to go w/the work treadmill!  if you are increasing to 6x watch your milege, decrease from your usual at least the frist week then eval how you feel and increase if you must, just be careful.  Rocks, ( what's your name) training very hard sounds, well hard.  again just be careful and if the race is important (and more important to you then the 26/30 goal) then train for it as you see best . this 6x plan may or may not fit you.  Eventhough i believe that if you are healthy and injury free you can tweek the 6x/wk to suit you by doing the proper distances and intensities.  I'd just hate to see any of you run yourself into injury. BTW I'm no coach or expert either just a fellow runner living and learning like you. love to hear other opinions out there.

It's 6:30 am in California. I'm writing this from the Burbank Airport, on my way up to San Jose for the Silicon Valley Marathon Sunday. Probably won't run today, since I'll get in plenty of miles tomorrow. :-) I haven't done a regular marathon since early 2006, so I'm pretty excited. Taking a two week vacation in the middle of my training schedule wasn't the best for my race prep, but it was really nice for life in general. So, I'm kinda curious to see how the race goes, see if I can hold a 8:34 pace for 26 miles... I'm also psyched to see my friend Tex (who's really from Wisconsin...) run his first marathon. I know Tex from ultimate frisbee but he's never done any straight running before and he started the marathon training partly to lose weight - last I'd heard he'd lost 20-30 lbs. Go Tex! We're starting to board, so time to end this post. Have a great weekend and some great runs! Sue

Day 3: Went for a slow/easy 3.5 miler. Was doing good with a nice slow jog, then the tummy started grumbling. Oh no, it was going to be one of those runs, and no port-o-potties in sight. Fortunately I was close to home and sprinted the last mile or so. Ended up running an extra half mile, usually the cool down walk to the front door, which bumped it up to somewhere around 4 miles. Made it just in time.   Oh, the adventures of running.

Florida finally cooled off. Last night got into the 60's for the first time in forever. The time changed and now cool it's light for the am runs. Perfect running weather.

Thanks for the advice, Marvin. I'm debating on when to take the rest days. Going north for 10 days over the holiday and was thinking of "banking" a couple of them for then. I know I'll need them up there. But I'm just going to have to listen to my knees more than anything and will rest when they say so.

4 miles (or so) in 38:24

    Everyone have a good one!

Per my running plan, I was not to worry about my pace yesterday, but it was important to get in my 7 miles, so while I'm down here in San Diego for the weekend, I did my 7.1 miles in 1:05.  I am reading these posts this morning because I am trying to gather more motivation to go out and do my 14 miles today.  I really don't want to, but this group is definitely helping.  I am just about the appropriate distance away from Fiesta Island (the birthplace of triathlon), so that is motivating me as well to run to that area.  Ciao for now.

I just got back from my "Fiesta Island" run.  What a nice change of pace compared to Los Angeles.  The miles went by fairly quickly as I had many sights to looks at, especially the bird and critter preserve in and around the island.  Very cool.

I forgot to eat before leaving, so within 3 miles my stomach was growling and I couldn't get FOOD off of my mind.  Luckily it subsided.  First thing once I was home was to make some toast with peanut butter.  Yummmm.

    Totals so far:

    Day 1 - 6.2 miles

    Day 2 - 3.2 miles

    Day 3 - 7.2 miles

Day 4 - 14.2 miles (I must like that ".2" mile thing) Laughing

    Total - 30.8 miles

With the minimum being 2.5 miles a day, does that mean I can take the next 10 or so days off?  Only kidding....

    Just checking in:

    11/1 3.4 miles (easy)

    11/2 3.4 miles (tempo)

    and

    11/3 3.4 miles (easy)

All 3 were just a simple loop in my neighborhood. I was feeling a little sick last a week or so ago, so I'm taking it pretty easy. It might have just been all the pollution from the fires.

    updates:

    11/4 ~4.4 miles

In spite of being kind of tired tonight, I had a really good run.  I started off at a comfortable pace, and increased the speed with each mile.

Let's see... 14.6 miles so far.  I guess I'll shoot for ~28 miles this week.

Did Muddy Buddy yesterday and did 3/5 run legs.  I got shin splints really early, but being on dirt roads and getting to ride the bike in between the runs really kept my capacity to pace myself.  During the last run stage, I was passing bikers uphill and down hill.  I don't consider the whole minute it took me to "run" through the 20-yard mud pit part of my run (pace killer!).

    11/1:  3.2
    11/2:  3.4
    11/3:  5.2
    11/4:  ~4

    Muddy Buddy

I did this race with a guy named John Clark (on the left), who needed a teammate for the race.  I ended up getting to race with him because I talked with a couple at the Renegade Adventure race a few weeks ago that said their friend needed a teammate, and I got shucked because registration was already full.

This pic was taken after they washed our faces off.  I'm waiting for that one still...

I had to work and there was no time to run. I was a little sore from the gym yesterday so maybe it was a good thing to have a rest day. But I am really looking foreward to a nice long run tomorrow. Hopefully 7 or so miles. The weather is perfect.

You know what they say about best laid plans...my 26.2 miles planned for Sunday turned into a big goose egg. Got sick Saturday night, lost most of my pasta dinner, bailed on the Sunday race. Weekend didn't feel like a total loss only because I got to help Tex get ready for his first marathon, got to watch him finish. He finished in 4:42!  Pretty impressive!

I thought it might be good to move around some today, despite taking the day off from work. And, yeah, taking 3 days off in a row in the first week would pretty much kill any chance I had of keeping to the 26/30 challenge. So, I did a 25 minute jog around the block. Not sure how much my stomach appreciated it, but was nice to get outside, do something exercise-y.

Back to the couch for me,

    Sue

I'm a run commuter!  No client visits, meetings or appointments so today ran to work and then at night ran home.  My first 2-Per since last years 26/30.  I feel very environmental and healthy to boot.  A day with no money, cell phone, wallet, keychain, or car just my office key.  Refreshingly wierd.

    Hi everyone!

So I have started this 26/30 off a bit slow. I had high hopes of joining you all on Thursday morning last week but had way too much fun cruising around town on my bike on Halloween. I did run on Friday morning for 35 minutes and Saturday evening for 35 minutes while in Dallas. Plan to run a lap this evening at the bowl. Are the only group runs Thursday morning or have others been formed?

Hey Rich! I saw you finishing as I was driving to the Rose Bowl to start my run. Looking good there! Didn't check the website this afternoon, otherwise would have joined you.

Didn't get to run till after dark so yet another lap around the bowl. Sigh. Was hoping to do 6 mi, but was feeling pretty drained after 3, decided not to push it. Big day planned for tomorrow, still recovering from being sick. On the upside, these 3 mi felt much better than yesterday's jog.

    Day 1,2,3 : 3.4

    Day 4 : 4.4

    Day 5,6 : 3.4

I ran 26 days straight in October, then took a few days off, and now I seem to be running a bit faster than last month in spite of gaining about 5 pounds.  I still feel slow compared to a year ago, but I feel like I'm getting back to form.

I couldn't run Monday and wrote it off as a rest day. I took advantage of the rest and did the long run Tues. I don't know if it was the temp change ( it finally cooled off here in Fla), the day of rest or the past few days of 3-4 milers but it was the easiest, most refreshing 7 miles I had ever run.  I wasn't sore or wiped out after.  And didn't need a nap, which is highly unusual.  So encouraging!  It felt so good that I decided to run another 7 today. I know that back to back long runs isn't always the smartest thing but I had some head clearing that really needed to be done and sometimes only a long run can do it.  So I ran a little longer and added a few hills and it went great.
Tomorrow will be an easy 3 miler on a treadmill.

    Day 5: no run

    Day 6: 7.06  1:05:30

    Day 7: 7:31  1:07:29  (hills)
