I'm a fifteen year old girl, with a BMI of 18.6.  Mathmatically I know I'm not overweight.  However, I can't seem to get rid of a "fat roll" on my stomach.  I do the same abdominal exercises as others on my cross country team, and most of them have flat stomachs or even six packs.  I work out in the weight room, do ab exercises, run, and eat right.  After the season ended I lost about 5 pounds but most of it came off my legs and very little off my stomach.  Any suggestions as how to make my weight loss come off my stomach?

Just keep at it!  - I can't get rid of my belly roll either; I used to weigh 18 stone 5 years ago, now I'm 13 which is just about right for someone of my build, but the little bit around the belly persists!  Like you, I've tried various exercises , press-ups, sit-ups, etc but it just dosent want to go - I'm a little old for a six-pack now, but i'll persist with a running regime which I hope will tone it up- eventually

the way to look at it is, having something to strive for keeps you going.

(annoying as the situation around your middle may be!)

Congrats Trotters on losing 5 stone (~70 pounds)!

Be patient youngsam, as you are indeed young.  There is still time for you to grow and lengthen out even more.  18.6 is on the low end of the BMI, for the average person, but probably the norm for someone logging XCountry miles.  Try to stay positive and like Trotters said, keep it as something to strive for. Don't let it be a source of stress or frustration, but rather something to achieve.  Unfortunately there is no way to "spot treat" areas that you want to lose weight.  Your body will lose from all over as you burn calories doing crunches.  The main reason people may think spot treating works is because they have minimal muscle, say on their arms with plenty of flab, and then they do Bicep Curls.  The muscle will build and lean out the arm because the lean muscle is growing and the fat is being burned simultaneously by exercising.  Good luck with your running and hopefully you'll get what you want in due time.

    Youngsam,

It is probably just going to be your body type to be leaner on the bottom than on the top. I know lots of women who would die for leaner legs! (Me being one of them).

I am the opposite - 37 years old, with a BMI of just under 25. I am lean and toned on top and heavier in my butt and thighs. When I lose weight, it all comes off my arms and upper body. It will not come off of my legs, no matter how hard I try! I remember having heavier legs when I was your age too.

Try not to worry too much about it, and don't compare yourself to other people. All you need to do is accentuate the positives and flaunt the things that you really like about your body. Personally, I wear lots of tank tops to show off my upper body and skirts or pants to minimize my legs. If you've got great legs, by all means, show them off!

I am 36 and I find that if I stay away from refined sugars and stay away from carbs my stomach is much flatter. I too am a skinny person but age is catching up to me and so are the tummy rolls. Try eating more lean proteins, fruit and veggies and whole grains.

youngSam, I am also a 15 year old cross country runner. My parents and my coach told me to make sure to do different abb exercises everyday and you won't find the results you want if you workout the same part of your abs everyday. Ask your coach or trainer for some abb exercises you can do everyday.

I hope this information will help you, goodluck.

I recommend running more, how many miles a week are you docking for cross country?  To help with running more, sike yourself up for the next big cross country meet, pick another girl out from your team or a rival team and strive to school her next race.  Thats the best way to get yourself motivated.  Add 4-8 miles more a week and do your best when cross training to always do a new exercise so your body doesnt get used to the same thing.

These ideas should all help, but like some people have said, it is very possible that it is simply your body. One more thing to look for- are you drinking PLENTY of water? Are you consuming too much sodium in your diet? I'm going to assume that, in your case since you run cross country, this is not a problem (at least I hope not!) but excess sodium and/or lack of hydration can cause bloating and make it impossible to every achieve a flatter stomach! As counter-intuitive as it may seem (when you gulp down a ton of water your stomach clearly expands initially to hold it all) drinking more water can flatten your belly! Good luck! But as its been said... please don't worry too much about it! =)

I agree with runfasterblondie & emc13013.  You definitely should watch what you intake in your daily diet.  But at age 15, you shouldnt have to worry just yet.  As long as you excercise daily and maintaine a well balanced meal, you'll be alright.  I love work out at the gym, I'm turning 36 soon and this body is definitely not getting any younger.  Working out 6 days/a week is a challenge but you do not have to be perfect to maintain great physique.  No matter how many sit-ups you do, most people will not get the abs they long to desire.  Just keep yourself undercontrol and you'll be alright.

    Youngsam,

Check out the Abs Diet for Women book. Basically, it tells you to cut out the trans fats and high fructose corn syrup from your diet in order to trim belly fat. Make sure you tell your doctor/OBGYN before dieting! And your mom :)

yes, weight flucuation is normal, depending on your fluid intake and training.  If I'm dehydrated or just come back from a long run in 80 degree weather I'm usually down anywhere from 1-4 pounds.
