Ingrid stay safe and dry. William congrats on your 5K pr, great time!

On Sat I ran the South Pasadean Tiger Run 10k and am Happy to say met my goal to set a new PR, 45:58.  I guess real fast guys in my AG (40-44) did not show up for this local race because I also took 1st place in my AG.  My previous PR on a flater course was 47:44 and my time in this race last year was 49:11.  So I am happy to see much improvements from a year ago. Took Sunday off and after packing my shoes and clothes to work today and planning to run all day, did not.  So 2 days off in a row!  I've got the RoseBowl Half Mary this Sat so I'll be going out tomorrow with the emphasis this week of 2 longer runs.  Flat wore out the running shoes last month. Passed the 400mile mark, so ordered my self a new pair.  supposed to rain on this Sat's hilly part trail corse. so i'm not putting any PR expectations on myself.  Will go for the PR in either the Jan or April 1/2 mary.

You northern runners....Hang in there :) Sorry to hear it has gotten so nasty so soon up there.

So my goal this month is to run more miles than last.I don't necessarily want to run everyday but I  might have to, to meet the goal. It's going good so far. What's weird is that my mpm has gone from the mid 9's to the mid to low 8's, for all runs with no trouble, and I even did a sub 8 average on a 4 miler. I've never been so fast. Not sure why, but it's awesome.

Marvin.. Congrats on the 1st place AND the PR!!!!!  How cool is that!  Who knows, maybe you will PR this Sat, sometimes those things just happen. Good luck.

    Adios, Margo

Congrats Marvin on your PR!  It's always a head game when you're in the race and thinking about it, way to win the physical and mental battles.

Margorita, you go girl!  Improvement is the blossom of seeds sewn in practice.  Keep it up.

Don't tell my gf but I'm having a love affair with my new shoes, they're really comfy and supportive.  I'm just trying to get them broken in before the half on Saturday (which I signed up for a long time ago, forgot, then signed up to volunteer, then realized I had paid for it and am planning on running it for the second time).  Luckily we get to run in the mud in the first few miles of the Rose Bowl Half - we'll burn more calories as we carry the mud for the last ten miles of the race! It's been 4+ years since I last ran over 9 miles in a row.  But I've done a few 6+ milers recently, and it begs a quote from my uncle - "However far you can run, you can run twice as far".  By that logic I'm Dean Karnazes, but I'll take the message.

Hey guys, good luck Saturday!  Wish I had a race too, but no such luck.  I really don't have the cash to race that much anyway, it gets expensive quick!

Margo, congrats on the pace increase.  Sounds like we'd make good traning partners, that's just where I'm at as well.  Last month (just like you) in the mid to upper 9's, this month low 8's easy...even on tough hilly courses.

As for December I'm 5 for 5 and I've run 9 days in a row!  I'm not tired, not fatigued and ready to run every day.  Don't know if I can go all 30 like David (Shattuck) or not but as long as I feel fresh I'll keep it going.

Congrats on the AG win and the PR, Marvin -- and have a great race this weekend!

I've continued with my plan, and am now on 35 consecutive days.  I've dialied up the mileage this week, with 4.85/5.11/5.27/5.56/5.34 miles so far this week,  which adds up to about a marathon.  I'm trying to build the distance each week this month, with a total goal of 200 miles for December.  We'll see how long I last.  What I've found is that I have to be really willing to go really slow on some days, but I seem to recover after doing that.  No races until next year, so this month is all about patient running.  Next month, I'll throw in some rest days and fast stuff so I can race a half marathon in Feb.

Fatigue set in this week for me. Monday's run, I fell in the stream on the trails behind JPL (put foot down on slippery rock and did a slow-mo fall, butt first, into the stream...). After that, found myself stopping several times to walk. Tuesday's run was a little better. Wed night track, everyone there felt sluggish but managed to feel better by the end. Thursday run was best run of the week -- largely due to running with Marvin and Bruce, both of whom have such positive attitudes that it's impossible to be in a bad mood around them.

Went to Jay for massage after Thursday's run and HOLY MOLY, the tendons in my foot are tight again and I really need to get back to doing the PT stuff I was doing for my plantar fasciitis. I do not want to go through that torture again. I suppose I could avoid the foot pain more easily by just, you know, not running...but, yeah...where's the fun in that? Makes much more sense to run so I can pay someone to put me in excruciating pain so I can run some more...

Anyway. Not a stellar week for me, but am looking forward to tomorrow's race - might not be that speedy, but it will be fun to be out there racing.

Good luck to everyone running and/or racing this weekend!

Gotta go do some work with the foot roller :-),

Congrats to everyone doing the half today, somehow we managed to pull out with good weather and dry trails!  Dunno about the rest of you but the rest of the day is off, complete with more beer and lots of TV.  My legs are so sore, they're mad at me, but I'm happy at them.  I actually got to meet PTC people I never have during the race.  It was quite the race and social event afterwards.  If anyone has any pictures, please post!

Can't wait for next year's half!

Satruday's Rose Bowl half was a great race. I was not expecting to PR but the conditions were great. and that was part due to the fact that i was racing with so many PTC and 26/30 friends.  PTC had a hilarious water startion at mile 5 ,some in full costume.  My wife, kids and students from my church were working the mile 11 station.  I really think the 26/30 running is paying off for me.  I now have PR'd in 3 distances.  I am in total neglect of my bike.  So all of this running fun needs to come to a end.  I do hope that it translates into improved triathlon results this season.  I have at least 1 more 1/2 Mary i get to do mabie a second.  Took Sunday and today off. running only 4-5 days/wk now.

congratulations to so many of you who raced your first 1/2 and those of you who had amazing results.

race results: 1:39:04 13th in Ag, 86th OA

Saturday's race was a lot of fun - I don't think I was smiling as much at the end as I was at the 10k mark (where that picture was taken). Thanks, Marvin, for posting that pic! It was really nice to have a good race after a blah week of running, and before this week. Am at a conference in San Francisco -- annual meeting where everyone I work with shows up and talks about what they've been doing research-wise for the last year. It's in a great location (Moscone Center) near Union Square, which is all decked out for the holiday season. But, it tends to be a crazy week, with lots of meetings within the meeting, a lot of stress, and not a lot of sleep or time to exercise. I've hit the hotel gym twice, but have only done 30 minutes of running (spent more time on the exercise bike). Am not too worried about that since I kinda think I should recover from the half and also take it easy before 50k this Saturday. I signed up for this 50k run north of SF back in September, thinking it would be a really nice way to de-stress from this meeting. I've got 2.5 days more to go at the meeting and I'm already sitting in talks, daydreaming about Saturday's trail run... Anyway. Hope you all are having a good week! I need to get back to the conference hall soon... Cheers, Sue

    Hi everyone,

Been away from posting for awhile, but still running strong. As soon as the 26/30 ended I started training for my first half and so far so GOOD, thanks to the November challenge. I am finally learning and practicing tempo runs. I always thought a run was a run...but have been reading alot and trying new things. My Christmas list to my husband is full of running gear...oops, forgot to ad a spa certificate to the list, hee hee...

Sounds like everyone is doing well. Susan, sorry you had a bad week but soundslike you bounced back. I used to go to conferences at the Moscone Center. That's a nice area.

    Take care everyone!

Ran the Griffith Park "Say No to Drugs" 10k today with the PTC Lisas and Lynda, Bill, and Udi (sp?) were there too.  I've run a 39:51 before on a hilly course back in high school, but those days are long gone.  I would have been happy with anything under 47:00 today.  I came through with a 44:47 (45:05 officially).  That makes for a 7:12/mile, my best pace of the season!  The latter 5k was faster, and the last mile was the fastest.  I love to run races with a negative split, I know I ran it the right way when I'm tired but finishing faster than when I started.

This is my third run in December (yeah I've really fallen off since November), but two of those runs have been races where I've done way better than I thought I would.

    Hi Everyone!

Sorry it's been so long since I have written. I miss the commitment that we all shared, it really kept me going. This month has been more of a struggle, with all the "cheer" that's been available. That and the NFL. I love December.

I won't meet my goal to run more miles this month. Think I'm going to save that goal for the new year. But I am doing more longer runs. I have been running on a road that banks on each side and have irritated my right knee. It aches all the time but oddly enough is pain free while running. So that's cool. I stopped running there but there is a half in Jan that I am planning on and it goes right through there.  Hopefully is heals up.

Congrats to all of you who have been racing. And my heart goes out to those battling the miserable weather.  Yuck.

Hope everyone is having a good holiday season. Keep on keepin on.

Happy Holidays everyone! I'm taking it easy after doing a 50km trail run this past Saturday. It was a very pretty course, but I was really sore for two days afterwards. Now, all I want to do is bike and swim. :-) Did try a short run yesterday and didn't feel too bad, but got tired very fast. So its swimming and biking the rest of the week. Next week I'll be in New Hampshire, where they've got 10 feet of snow (not really, but it will feel like that compared to Pasadena) Will hopefully get outside, do some snowshoeing, x-country skiing, snowman building if I can get my butt off the couch and away from my Mom's Christmas cookies... Merry Christmas! Sue

Happy Holidays everyone! I hope you are all doing well and enjoying this time of year. I've been sticking to my half marathon training program, despite running in temps in the low 30's and rain (brrr!) I gave my husband a list of running gear "santa" can bring me, if he is so inclined. Since he ordered a lift for the garage for himself (yes, it lifts one car in the air so you can park another underneath) I think I'm entitled to some running gloves and underarmour!

Despite the good runs, I am embibing in far too much cheer and I fear for my waistline! Wink

Ho Ho Ho!  Oh, DogSports I hear you loud and clear. I'm dying for Jan to get here and end this holiday feasting madness. Party after party after party.  Everything tastes so good and it's one toast after the other.  It is alot of fun though, and great to get to see everyone. But I know what's on the very top of the resolution list.  Congrats on the training. Keep it up.  And good luck with the X-mas list.

I was having knee trouble after switching to a different brand of shoe. So I switched back to my faithfuls and all is well. Doing more longer runs, 7-10 miles and keeping up a quicker pace,  but not running as often and trying to spend more time in the gym. There is still that half that I want to run in Jan and there is also a very hilly 5 miler before that. I usually run the hilly coarse during the dailys so it shouldn't be much of a challenge.

Speaking of challeges.....I'm sure that there are more than a few of us looking to burn off some of the cheer come new years. Anyone interested? Any ideas?

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

    New Years Day Run
Start your New Year off with a run down The Rose Parade route an hour before the parade starts.  see "Rose Parade Run" on group routes.
    1.                  6:21am Meet on the train platform to take the Gold line train from the Sierra Madre Station, Sierra Madre Villa Ave and Foothill Bl.  Parking and train ride are all free on Jan 1.
    2.                  6:30, Get off on Del Mar Station, go west 3 blocks to Orange Grove to the staging area and get to see the floats up close as we casually make our way to Colorado enjoying the scenary.
    3.                  7:00 from the top of Orange Grove and Colorado , run down the parade route before 1/4 million spectators cheering you on for 5 of the most righteous and rowdy miles you’ll ever run.
    4.                  Turn L on Sierra Madre Bl and then R on Foothill back to cars at station.
    5.                  8:00 meet for coffee and treats at Starbucks 3429 Foothill Bl.
    6.                  Go back to bed!
If for some reason 5.8 miles is not enough of a New Years day run for you then start running at 6 am from Sierra Madre to the parade start and back for an 11 mile round trip.  And if some of you want to originate your morning closer to Orange Grove and Colorado then you can train it back to Pasadena from Sierra Madre.  Special recognition goes to the person who does this run on the least amount of sleep!  Who’s in?  Please reply.  and please feel free to invite anybody.

Aiee Everyone. Life's been pretty damn good; Santa brought me new running gloves; the winter sf bay views have been spectacular; the grazing cows with their little ones mellow and cute; the soaring hawks (with occasional fly-by) fast and fascinating. Have a great new years! - Rob

OK so there has been some talk of a new challenge for the new year after all of the above we've partaken in.  This is what i'm proposing. The 26/31.  Since I and several others need to start mixing it up for the coming triathlon season.  I am challinging each of us to do 26 workouts in the month of January doing 1 sport or a mix of anything.  Wether Running, biking or swiming or something else.  The something else is what will be interesting, what else some of you out there do for fun and fitness.  What do you all think?  Is this too non-specific to make it interesting?  Needs perameters?  I know for my self since my last race i have only been running 2x/week and at most 4x of anything and have gained 4 lbs!  So stepping up to 6x will be a needed challenge.  Happy New Year!!

    Hi everyone!

Hope everyone is doing well and had wonderful Holidays!

This month has been a very quiet one for me in terms of training. I ran a few times but my Achilles seems to still be bothering me. I did start taking Brandon Hament's spin class and have gone 3 times now. I have never taken a spin class before but I am really enjoying it. I plan to take more in the new year.

I also plan to go back to swimming and do the Polar Bear Challenge with the Master's group at the Rose Bowl. You have to swim 19 times in the month of January. I did it last year. It was tough to get up in the morning and bear the cold weather but it was worth it.

So with that said I will participate in the 26/31 challenge but mixing it up with swimming and spin classes.

Happy New Year everyone! Have fun on the early morning run. I will be sleeping in after a night of craziness!

    26/31 in January?  I'm in!

I'll be joining Nan on Tuesday nights taking Brandon Hammet's spin class; if you're in the area and haven't taken one of his classes yet, I highly recommend it.  It's so darn cold to ride out there at night - stay indoors and get a great cycling workout!

I'm fighting a cold right now so I'm not sure I'll be there New Year's day... we'll see.

Here's to a new year and new training goals; I wish everyone the best!

COOL!  A new challenge!  I would prefer to make it all running but I absolutely must get my ever enlarging be-hind in the gym too. I'm  beginning my training for a Marathon in April and must include some x-training. So this will be perfect. Hopefully I can get out of bed tomorrow, the 1st, and get some miles in before work. Maybe that will deter me from drinking to much champagne tonight. (yeah, right).  Wish it was summertime and able to swim again.

Hope everyone has a great, and safe, night tonight. Don't forget the resolutions!

Cheers to '08!!!!!   Can you believe it's here already?!?!?

Happy New Year everyone! I am COMPLETELY up for the 26/31 challenge. I am continuing on my half marathon training, so am doing six days a week anyway. This will provide the inspiration I need to keep going. I ran a great hilly four miler today to start the new year (couldn't do more after my New Year's champagne!)

Completely off topic. Our son turned four on New Years Eve...I just have to say that it is SUCH a fun age. He now gets down on the floor and does pilates with me. It's hilarious.

Margorita...I got a whole mess of running goodies from Santa. I was so excited! So...training is going great. But here I thought after New Years, the parties would stop. NOT SO. Our Seattle Seahawks start in the playoffs this coming Saturday and guess who's hosting a playoff party? I'll get a good run in first and TRY to stick to the veggie tray (does that include bloody mary's? They have celery in them, right?)

I'm so glad we are all sticking together for the New Year. Thanks to Marvin for keeping this fun, interesting and inspirational! Aside from my half marathon goal (and maybe marathon goal down the road), I have a goal of shrinking two sizes by May, our tenth anniversary. We're leaving our little boy with grandma and heading to Molokai for ten days of rest and relaxation. Would LOVE to be bikini worthy by then (too much information?)

    Peace,
    Ingrid Cool
