17 miles today. Ran ten minutes in the middle at ~marathon pace and then did seven minutes at faster than tempo pace a little later. I crashed hardcore in the end though since I ran without having anything to eat in the morning. The last few miles were definitely a struggle
Did 4 miles today at marathon pace. I was able to keep the pace in check. I had a bowl of Grape Nuts about an hour before running, which gave me a bit of a stitch and kept me from going too fast (anything that works). I took Fri and Sat off to give the legs a bit more rest and allowed me to move the longer run to Monday since Boston Marathon is on Mon. Despite the two days off, the legs are still feeling a bit fatigued from last weekend. I wasn't planning on any more speedwork until the race.....so hopefully the legs will get some mojo back over the next two weeks.
Also, I went to my two kids track and field event (grades K - 8) today . I did not run track and field in school, nor did I really attend entire events in the past so I didn't realize how long these events last. It took 6 1/2 hours before they each did their three events!...in a day of 40 degree weather! I figured my shivering over this time can be logged as cross training!
KDogg, is that K for Killa?! Killer time. Love reading that stuff. (Not the most sensible thing to run 17 miles without food though; what were you thinking?)
6 miles with 3 miles tempo in the middle. Nothing special.
I have seen an add recently in a running magazine for toe spacers. I'd imagine you could use one of those. They might sell them at a running store I guess. Or maybe you could just tape it to the toe it rides and it wouldn't have enough room to climb up and bully your middle toe.
Didn't run a single step all weekend so we'll do Sunday's 3 mile run, X mile swim, and weights for those who are still allowed.
Today was a real confidence booster for me. We did 10x400m with 90s rest, it was really windy (20mph gusting to well over 30) and about 84F. My splits were 63 63 63 62 63 62 62 61 61 59.
This weekend is our home meet and I'm going to double in the 1500m and the 5k, which are just 2 hours apart. I dont believe in throwing out times before I run them but I will say I am expecting good things in the 1500 this weekend. Then hopefully the 5k wont be completely terrible.
KDogg, your times are still inspirational, if not attainable, for me. I guess that goes for most of the people's times posted on here! I guess I'm the fat old slow dude for now, though I am improving.
ChiggXC, good luck this weekend. Let us know how you do. Those splits look damned impressive to me, especially with that West Texas wind!!!
Danachristine7, I too am running Chicago in October. Hope to see you at the finish, though it sounds like you are running faster than me.Good luck with the toes (never thought I'd type that)!!
ex-k1w1, Thanks for the encouragement. I think you are right. I decided to put my foot to the distance test today, since I've already tried a little light speedwork. Today was a 10.55 miler in 1:53:42 (10:46 pace). It was slower than I hoped, but still not bad, considering I wanted to take it easy. Plus, there was a horrendous southwest wind that was blowing across me almost the entire time. I had about a half mile with the wind to my back. The rest of the time, it was 25+mph either into my face or blowing me sideways. There were times I actually had to turn my head to get a breath because the wind was blowing so hard. The good news is, no foot pain at all! I guess it wasn't broken after all! I followed it up with a great dinner and an ice bath (the first time I tried this.... is it supposed to hurt so good?!)
Stretching, resting, and maybe a bike ride tomorrow, then a 4-6 mile recovery run on Wed. Good luck on your upcoming runs, everyone!
chiggy, keep those splits coming. They're great. Good luck for the 1500 this weekend. If I'm reading between the lines correctly, you are looking forward to the shorter event more this time round.
I gave blood yesterday, so had a very easy 6 miles today.
AFter still feeling crook, I bit the bullet and got some medication into me. No wonder those things are illegal. I felt bullet proof.
We did a lap of the tan warm up and then did a lap time trial. I did 3.85 km in 15.39. I felt horrible half way through but just kept on pushing it. Had officially zero in the tank at the end, which I suppose is what you want. It was the fastest I had run over something longer than about 500m, so I am rapt with that.
London marathon this week, I have a few mates running so I will keep an eye on them.
I feel the need to brag on a friend of mine, Haron Lagat, for a minute. He placed 3rd in the Carlsbad 5k in Cali. this past weekend behind some VERY fast runners, and he was only 2s behind 1st. His time you ask? 13:36!!! (and yes that is for 5k). I chatted with him a little on today's run and he said they went out "way to slow" the first mile in 4:28 because everyone was waiting for Allen Webb to make his move. Then he took over because no one else would and hit the next mile in 4:22, and the third mile probably close to 4:16. I think he was actually a little dissapointed in his time! He is probably the only person I will ever meet that could ever be mad that Allen Webb held the pace back and screwed up his time.
Oh and I'm going to have to race him this weekend in the 1500. Well I wouldn't say race, more like start at the same time and go the same distance. But i'll try to keep him within 100m. ;)
Just ran an easy 3miles today. Legs are still a little sore after the 1/2 this last Saturday. When the pain comes I'm reminded of when I hit "The Wall" just after the 10mile mark for the 1/2 Marathon. There was this guy walking on the side of the path. I could tell he had hit the wall too, but he was still going to finish; even if he had to walk the whole way. What still sticks in my mind when I feel pain is what his T-shirt read.
"PAIN IS JUST THE FEELING OF FEAR LEAVING YOUR BODY!"
:and with those inspiring words. Be well and run safe all.
A slowish 8 miles today. Very lethargic. Not feeling good about running at all. However, knowing I had to post here kept me going. Amazing what motivates at times.
gfinkelde, nice lap. That Tan certainly gets a workout.
It's chilly today; 38 degrees with a "real feel" of 31 degrees. I ran 4 miles outside today in 35:52. Definitely not close to any of my better 4 mile times. I felt sluggish and the 25mph wind gusts at my face certainly didn't help. When I turned around and headed home the thing that kept me going was that I wanted to plug my numbers into my training chart. Plus...I don't like starting something and not finishing. It's a life motto thing.
DrKonijn- I'm just curious, what was your 11 mile time...you know, the one where you say you run the wrong way?
Did my first "tempo run" tonight. 10km in exactly 45 minutes. It felt uncomfortable the entire time, and horrific for the last km....
Wasn't really in the mood for running - I have twins (8mths old) who are keeping me in a constant state of fatigue. But I am glad I went...so I have something to post!
But anyway...I guess it's just the start of my training. I really should shed about 3 or 4 kgs too. That might lighten the load a bit :)
Plus I have to keep up with LexB's amazing progress....!!!
7:24s aren't bad, most runners would be proud to run that pace. Good luck tomorrow in the wind and rain (I'm definitely not looking forward to it)
As for my training, I ran an easy ten miles on the trails. I kinda destroyed my (kinda) new white shoes, oh well they are running shoes they are meant to be muddy.
I've got an easy five miles tomorrow and some strides and then a fast 10k this Friday night. I'm pumped
Ha ha... SimmoT - you nailed me with the 10k dude... I'm pretty slow, so you have a good 5-10 mins on me!
I'm actually a bit worried about my leg today - my knee is quite tender and I keep getting twinges down the side of my shin and on the inside top of my food. Hoping it's not serious - rested today and tomorrow evening just kickboxing (I'm hoping a thorough stretch out will help it). Friday is supposed to be a long run but I'll see how it feels as I have the Sun Run on the 20th so don't want to injure myself. I've found out I am going to be running with a bunch of guys from my kickboxing club - alas I think they're all long-legged 6' tall black belts so I don't know how I'm going to keep up!
Go runners! I plugged on today with 6 * 400m repeats with 200m rests. Again, untimed and only nominally 400m but the effort level was definitely high (85 - 90%).
May have a couple of easy days before a 10k road race on Sunday.
I am really enjoying my running at the moment. Now I have added the speed sessions into my regime, not only do they feel beneficial, I am always looking forward to them, and enjoyin them while they are on.
Today was a 3.8km warm up then fartleks consisting of 6 x 2min efforts with 1 min jog in between then 6 x 1 min efforts with1 min jog in between. Really hard work but loved it. In 29 minutes of running, including the resting jog I got about 6.5km, which I was happy with. Will do a couple of 8km over the weekend.
Pick up my bike tomorow and will start riding the 20km to and from work each day. Have signed up to do a 210km ride (round the bay in a day) the week after the marathon. Someone said the cross training will do my running the world of good. Most have said I am nuts.
Have a great weekend guys
Everyone is making really decent progress. Excellent to see!
It was bucketing it down here today with a temp of around 12c. I don't mind the rain at all, and I'll take it over wind any day! The warm up isn't that pleasant but once I get going it's not too bad at all. I did 6.5 k at MP feeling jelly legged for the first couple of k. I got into it after that. Afterwards I did 3 x 1600m at about 75% w/800m jogs in between. Recovery run tomorrow.
The unpredictable weather continues. Yesterday was rain and thunderstorms, today was a dust storm with 43mhp winds and gusts that could blow you off your feet. It was an unhappy 8 miles...
I got out early this morning once again in the pouring rain. It was just as hard if not harder than yesterday. Today was a recovery run and I tried a new route with 80% of it on muddy trails. I was slipping and sliding all over the place but loved running through the flooded tracks. It was hilly and heavy but it kept my pace reined in. I ended up doing 13.7k and feel alright. Going to take it really easy for the next week. Off tomorrow and a 11k jog on Sunday. I'll make sure I'm back home in time to catch the London marathon on telly. The field looks really strong despite Paula Radcliffe pulling out. Got a couple of mates running in it too.
Good luck to all those racing this weekend. Have a good one.
Whoever watches the wind will not plant;
whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. Ecclesiastes 11:4
It's amazing what a little rain and threat of thunderstorms can do to a popular running route. I only encountered about 5 other runners( all going the opposite direction of course) as opposed to the hundreds. It barely even so much as sprinkled the whole time I was out there. I was able to do better than Tuesday but only about 4 seconds over all. It might have gone better if I didn't start out too fast. I was at about 6:43 after 3 miles. Between 3-6 I kind of faded off into la-la land and slowed down. Note to self daydream about things that are faster. Fighting through the last mile I decided that, best time or not, the difference between smashing my previous time was whether I was willing to hold the lead I had on Tuesday's shadow rather than a close finish.
6 miles yesterday....4 more this morning. The legs don't feel fatigued anymore......but they are still groggy. The kind of groggy feeling that usually goes away after 5 or 6 miles. I have also tried to keep the meals (mostly the carbs) to a minimum while my mileage has dropped.....so maybe that is having an impact. You know the race is getting close when the total miles I plan on running from here on out is shorter than the race itself. Carbo load starts one week from today......bring on the endless bowls of pasta and Lentil soup!
SimmoT - you're still safe - did 10k today which took me little over an hour! Not super fast but a comfortable run, I felt like I could call it an easy 10k which is awesome - very happy, I really enjoyed it!
There were some beastly hills (North Van is super hilly) but it still felt comfy. I partly enjoyed it so much as the evening sun was glorious - and surrounded my snowcapped mountains and twinkly blue ocean - well the views are just gorgeous wherever you look. I LOVE running out here!
Looks like everyone is having a great time and doing real well. I, too, have added speedwork to my routine. I jogged about 10 minutes to the track, then did 5x1600's with 400 jogs, with 1600 splits of 7.40, 7.41, 7.53, 7.46, and 8.04, then jogged about 10 minutes back. If I did my math right, that's 10k (6.2m) total at the track, plus 2.05 miles to get to and from the track, for a total of 8.25 miles. It took me about 1:16:00 total to run the whole thing. I'll run a few easy miles tonight and Monday, then Tuesday starts my official marathon training program. I'll be running lower daily mileage for a while, but more days, so the total weekly mileage should be about the same.
westconn, what race are you running, and when is it?
Good luck to anyone racing this weekend, and enjoy your runs.
I'm back!!!!!! Literally and figuratively. Hurt my back doing basically nothing about a month ago, I guess it was 2/9, b/c that was my last post. I have been very cautious with it up to now, and just started up again. Had a good one this morning, ran sub 36 for my 3.6 mile, felt great to be back out there again and running. Great to be back everyone.
After a couple too many nights out on the turps did a 21km run at 30seconds over marathon pace. Probably should have done the middle section at marathon pace ... but I'll save that for next week.... good times gfinkelde...
One full week after the 1/2 and just ran my long run today. 8 1/2 min pace for 8miles. Plus I've lost ten lbs off the diet I'm on. I hope to be under 200lbs in 6 weeks for Burlington City. My goal is to finish my half of the 2 person relay at 1hr 54 mins or under. That would shave 8 to 14 mins off my past two 1/2 marathons.
Good luck to all in the week.
Yeah, yay, only 26 weeks to go. That seems a long way out to start a marathon training program. Having said that, after I start running again next week (my achilles finally came back and bit me after not really looking after it properly), I'll be building up my milage again ready to do a 15 week marathon build up. That'll give me 10 weeks to get my legs properly conditioned for a marathon program, so no speed work between now and then, just milage and hills!
Run on!
Afternoon all.
ex-k1w1 - I hope that heel is just a niggle. Good luck with the training.
I didn't post yesterday morning after my run as I was engrossed in the London marathon. The men's race was brilliant. Three of them running 2:05! I'm really happy for our Dan Robinson running 2:11 and giving Olympic champ Baldini a run for his money. Martin Lel is simply ridiculous and his sprint finish was mind boggling. Also, the American lad Ryan Hall ran his heart out and I reckon he's just going to get faster.
Before all that I made sure I got up and ran. I did a steady 12k off road. I'm trying to save pounding on the roads til Sunday. My legs feel a bit heavy today. In store this week: 5k tomorrow at MP, off Wednesday, Thursday speed work and 5k jog on Friday, Sat off, Sunday Zurich marathon!
Happy running all.
Had our home meet this weekend, ran the 1500m and 5k plus a little 15min shakeout run Sat morning. My times for both races were mediocre at best for me.
The 1500m (3:59) was first; I was in the fast heat with 7 good kenyans and a few others. I was in decent position the first lap but when I lost contact with the pack I slowed and got way off my goal pace. Looking back I would have rather tried to hang with the Kenyans and die the last lap intead of letting them go.
The 5k was 2 hours after the 1500 and it didn't go much better. I wanted to hit 15:00 but I knew it would be hard. I went out on pace in 4:47 and it felt easy but I knew what was coming; the 1500 caught up with me and I hit 5:12 and 5:10 for a 15:45. I was just tired and lost motivation. Again there was a group of Kenyans way ahead and no one to run with.
Back running after too much time off (it's amazing how life can get in the way). Ran 4 miles at lunch in 32 minutes flat which is pretty good for me considering the time away lately... but.....
...I hurt my IT band on my left leg. The pain is in the outside of my knee right where it connects (I've done this before on my right knee). I thought I had stretched it and warmed up enough but after the layoff I guess I had not done as well as I had thought. Does anyone have any advice on making sure this does not flare up again? I'd like to get back to a 4 day a week running routine but I am fearful that this is going to hold me back for some time.
Dan - My next race is the Boston Marathon. It is on Monday 4/21. Early weather forecast shows great weather (45 - 55 degrees) with partly cloudy skies. I hope that holds true.
Did 4 miles on Sun and 8 miles today. Everything seems to be going OK. I attended several parties over the weekend and am traveling this week seeing relatives during our kids spring break. Going to take it easy and try to lay off the bad food.
