Hey all. gfinkelde, Good luck on the half. I have one coming up in two weeks, though you look to be shooting for about 30 minutes faster than me. I'm looking to do it in around 2:00- 2:10. LexB, I, too have suffered a drop in speeds. I blame the heat and humidity that summer has brought about. Just stick with it. I'd suggest getting a running partner that is slightly faster than you.
Did a 5 mile road race with the wifey today. SHE BEAT ME!!! Honestly, I'm very proud of her. She ran a smarter race than I did. I took off about 30 seconds faster per mile than I planned, while she started off pretty conservatively. At about the 4.25 mile mark, she caught up, and managed to finish about a half minute ahead of me, with energy to kick at the end!!! She and I both know I'm the faster runner, but she's definitely the smarter runner.
Dan - the tortoise and hare - were you never read that story as a kid!!! Simmo (sorry had Harro on first edit - Aussie nicknames ending in 'o'!!!) have the old "run to the G", now called Run Melbourne. Hope the weather is nice but you never know with Melbourne!!! Starts way too early next Sunday morning.
Today they had an open day on a tollway that is open for cars in a fortnight. Approx 25,000 people on bikes doing either 10km, 30km or 65km. I did 30km but it was about 85 once i got there and back. It was terrific to take away some soreness from yesterday's run, as you couldnt go too fast because of the crowds. Did open it up a few times though!!!!
Have a great week everybody
Hi all,
Ive been MIA on the thread for a week or so. Have actually stepped up training with a group to get ready for my first marathon in October. Doing a lot more strength and technique as well as speed work. That means the half I'm doing at Run Melbourne next week I will run steady rather than as fast as I can. Although my competitive juices will most likely get the better of me. Ran 20km today first half I did up tempo - second half I ran easy to rest up for next week.
Still would like to make about the 1.45mins mark for the half next week.
Gfinkelde - I was going to do the Eastlink 6km run for fun but decided to put my time into a longer run for next week.
great race this morning. ran 5 miles in 45 and change. nice and muggy, but not too terribly hot. my only problem with the races in nyc is the major bottlenecks at the beginning. i feel my times could be a little faster because its always so jammed up for the first mile. i guess there isn't really anything i can do, as they corral us by speed, except maybe run faster!!
have a great dad's day, everyone.
Ran 8 miles for my long run this week. Improved my last week by 1 minute per mile...finished in 1hr12min. Still a bit off the time I'd like to be at. For some reason had a pain in my calf, and had to stop 3 times during the run to stretch.
2nd 5k ever, ran my first 5k ever a few weeks ago in 19:56
My goal was 19:30 but i messed up my pace. My first mile was a 6:07, and from that point i knew i wanst gonna be able to hold on to that pace. My 2 mile time was 12:28, and my finishing time was 19:49, a little off my target but pretty happy. Sophmore yr. of XC should help me get this time better
Good Afternoon Runners,
Nice to hear that everyone's geared up for the race running season. Good Luck Gfinkelde! Dan, I had the same probably with going out too fast. I didn't in my 1st half maraton this year back in April. Then with the May Half Marathon I went out slow and about mile 3 and 4 I kicked into my steady race pace. That's how I cut 15 mins. off my time from my best half run. KDogg, are you training for a marathon? I can't wait to run my 1st in Oct.
Just completed my 10miles at my training pace of 9:14 with 80degrees, sunny, and 45% humidity. I know I would have been under 8:30pace, but I'm trying to be smarter this time and train at the times I should. I've got 16 weeks and a couple of races before the marathon. Don't want to hurt myself know.
Good luck on everyone's up an coming races!
I ran 6.2 miles today. I had planned on 15 miles but my husband came with me and I felt guilty leaving him to walk by himself (with today being Fathers Day). We walked 5 miles together and of course he had to stop at his favorite bagel shop.
Had my long easy run today, a new 13km route. Was supposed to be easy but 1:27!!!! I SUCKED in terms of speed, that's a 10'55'' pace, which is c***
I am still pleased with myself in terms of distance coverage and over all performance but I am not very happy with my times. I didn't wear my watch as it was supposed to be an easy run, but next time I might have to!
Have the week off work this week. Did 3 miles this morning at about 11 in 75 degree and full sun. Felt good. No problems with knees or shins. I'll try again Wednesday and Friday.
LexB - a long easy run is supposed to be slow! That is the easy part of it. Lot's of reasons why the times might be off for now. Do you have a race coming up soon, like in the next couple of weeks? If not, I'd not worry about thie times too much. Keep up the training, make sure you are eating and sleeping right and you'll get the speed back. Didn't you write about a banged up shoulder a little while ago? How is that doing and any other injuries?
Okay, I'm thinking about joining this running forum thing, but I'll see how well I can stick to it. Most of you sound like pretty serious runners.... I am not so much. I am 14, run distance in track, and am planning to join cross county this fall. I have ran 23.5 miles since June 1, and that's the most amount of miles I've ever ran in 2 weeks. In an attempt to prepare for CC, I am trying to run 150 miles by August 11. I'm joining this so that hopfully you guys can keep me motivated to reach my goal. ( And maybe go beyond
)
So, I guess I'll just say what I did today.
I ran to the high school (about 1mile), went to a strength and conditioning class, and then took a little bit longer way home. Total it was just over 2.5 miles, which is about how much I have been running on Monday's, Wednesday's, and Friday's. My hip was hurting quite a bit on the way home ( I pulled my right hip abductor and adductor in early May while long jumping), but I think the pain is mostly due to soccer, where I start and stop running a lot. Starting and stopping seems to make it worse, because when I just run the pain subdues somewhat after 1.5 miles or so. Anyways that's all I did, and am planning to do today. Hopefully I'll have something to report tomorrow!
100 mile weeks in mid june? thats pretty sick
just a lot of 50-60 min runs for me, still moving the mileage up slowly
sabre - welcome on board. It is a great forum to be on. has helped me a heap. Ignore everything kdogg and chiggy do - they are freaks. ANyway good to have a younger one on here. Makes the rest of us feel really old. My advcie to you is enjoy your running. Enjoy whatever you do. And running is a hell of a lot better than sitting on the couch getting fat.
100miles in a week is insane. Nuff said!!!
Have had weird feelings this week. I am so much fitter, faster, stronger, better than I was four months ago, but kept on thinking that I wasnt doing enough running. Must be doing quality work which is pleasing. Coach is happy with the progress - I am nearly her poster boy!!!
Today was a huge session 3x1km, 2 downhill 1 uphill, 3x500m 2 uphill 1 downhill and 3 x 250m 2 uphill 1 downhill. Consistent pace inside 4min km's for all distances, which we managed to achieve comfortably on all but the uphill 1km which I just squeezed through. Everything else was well inside. The ride home was fast but easy, nice relaxing way to finish the day. Five days to the half.
No run today...but yesterday was 3.5 miles at about a 7:50 per mile pace. I've settled in to about 30 miles per week. Without any long races coming up anytime soon, I'm not worried about adding miles too fast. My longest week when I was training for a marathon was just around 43 miles...100 miles in a week? that's just nuts :). There's no way I'd have time to run that much.
gfinkelde~ thanks for the welcome! I totally agree with you on the fact that 100 miles in one week is not normal.
Today I ran 3 miles with the CC team and then I have a soccer game tonight. I am enjoying my running, most of time. I think I like it much more when I'm not actually doing it. :) Anyway my hip is still hurting, but I'm going to have my mom ultra sound it before the game tonight. See you later.
No run today but took a 42 mile bike ride. Didn't really intend to go that long, but the weather was great and I felt good, so I just kept going.
Well havent posted in a while but it has been great to read how everyone else is doing, Im waiting on my Doc to tell me what is up with my X-rays of my knee to find out whats causing the pain.
Keep up all the good work everyone it's good to hear about all your successes.
lets see, another double for me today. 11 in the morning and 5 in the evening. Nothing too special there. One little awesome thing is that I did get some wear test shoes in the mail today (I wear test for New Balance), so I am pumped to start those up. They are NB's high cushioned neutral trainer, the 1063 (current model is the 1062).
As for my mileage I'm up to 106 for the past 7 days. Thats as high as I'll be for awhile though, since this week is actually my "off" week and the week after this will be only a small building week. I am gonna take a day off on Thursday (been going 33 days straight) and I will be cutting back on my medium long run and long runs.
I think I can handle high mileage pretty well because I don't have a whole lot of stress in my life right now. I work about 25-35 hours a week at a running store that opens at 10 am, so its not as though I have to wake up super early to get a run in. I'd say my body is setup to handle high mileage pretty well too, my quads are more like a cyclist's than a runner's, so they absorb a ton of shock. Also, since I work at this running store, I am able to cycle through shoes. So instead of wearing the same pair every day, I am able to alternate at least three pairs of shoes so that each shoe is allowed to recover between each bout of running - which in turn reduces the stresses on your body that stem from running.
Also, my body does not respond well to interval training. When I run intervals I get sick. This past winter I put in a pretty good base (75-100 miles a week), but I was still feeling injured or sick almost every week after I dropped my mileage to do workouts. So in order to run fast I have to put in a lot of miles, which takes a lot of time and patience.
Lastly, I've never really ran up to my potential when I was on a team. This past year I think I was one of the most fit guys on the team, but come race day I would run much slower than I should have been based on my workouts and mileage.
The culmination of all of those things = high mileage for me at least until I go to law school in the fall.
107 miles in a week- I concur with the others, you're a freak Kdogg, and I mean that in the nicest possible way!!
rpetreccajr & SimmoT- thanks for the input. Yeah, I know that a long easy run should be easy - I reckon I was being too tough on myself! Thanks for pointing out the obvious. Tonight we did interval training. Intervals were 300m tempo / 150m easy-recovery. We did that 8 times. I was averaging 1'15'' on the tempo stretches (7.5 min/mile pace?). So very happy with my speed tonight. : )
I have been running longer distances, so I have been feeling it in my legs and feet. I am trying to take good care of myself, listen to my body and protect my joints including LOTS of stretching. I'm working REALLY long days (6am-8pm) 3 times a week so have at least 3 days without sports. I don't really want to cut back training any more than that. But given crazy schedules I do need to make sure that I am getting enough sleep, and eating the right things at the right times... all that jazz, I know.
Re: the shoulder - according to a chiropractor I have tendonitis. I am on a strict regimen of NO weights (man I miss the weights sessions!), no punching with my left arm (going to have to be a south paw who doesn't throw crosses or uppercuts!), icing four times a day and anti-inflammatories for a week. At least i know where to hold the ice pad now! Not happy with the synopsis though! Darnit!
Thanks for the thoughts guys - really appreciate it!
Kdogg - you dont have to justify your obvious mental deficiencies to us!!! Enjoy Thursday.
Seriously - if I can speak for those who are down a peg or two on the running ladder from you - you are one of the guys who helps us a long. Seeing the regimented program that you put yourself to make yourself a better athlete - as distinct from fitter, or a better fun runner - has been inspriing for me, hopefully for others. And you obviously enjoy it which as I have said before is the main thing. And we are happy to share in your shoe fetish. If you are ever in Oz then I wear a size 11-11.5!!! High arch, but tend to run on the outside of the foot.
gfinkelde
My half is in Fairfield Connecticut. Thanks everyone for the advise. I did two sixes and then a few 3s last week. This week I did a 2 and a 3. Today I'm going to do a five, I think, then I'll do a 3 tomorrow and a 2 Friday? I think. LoL! I feel like the first week I had my son...I thought I had it all figured out, then I'd be like, "I think, maybe, I don't know". LoL! The race is Sunday, so wish me luck. I'm probably gonna yak. LoL!
I wanted to be like Kdogg today so I got up early and did 35km before work, 16 during my lunch break and then did 47km ater work. The rid home was a bit hard - hope I am not to stiff for football training.
Actually for my last decent run before the half I did a nice easy - bot good pace - longer run. Ran for a bit over an hour, just chatting to the coach, but we still ran at a good clip. She thinks I am running her off her legs. Not likely but it is nice to hear her say it.Everything felt good during the run and I pulled up ok. Really looking forward to Sunday.
Good luck burgalurg, and anybody else who is running. WIll let you know how I went on Sunday afternoon
I ran 3.5 miles with the CC team at 26:07. Then we went out to Perkins, and had breakfast. I have soccer tonight, and I might try to run another 2 miles before then.
asics, Asics, ASICA, Asics, asics; ok, I've completed my advertisment for the week
Just got the Nimbus - 10 in the mail last friday (I wear test for myself,
). I got them on sale through RoadRunner. I have the VIP, plus I had an additional $10 off; so they only cost me $97.95 with free shipping.
Anyway, I've put only 15 miles on them. They have got to be the best shoes I've run in yet; especially with my high arches. Gfinkelde with your high arches, these might be the ones.
I doubt it's the shoes, but I just ran my fastest pace yet (off of a treadmill). 5miles at a 7:30 pace.
Good Luck on the races Burgalurg, Gfinkelde, and Kdogg
Run safe everyone!
Nimbus 10s are pretty sweet if you are a neutral runner with a little bit of weight (not fat or anything like that, but if you are a super small person then that type of shoe won't be any better than say a Cumulus). One pretty cool thing about them is since they are so substantial, they will last a bit longer than other similar shoes with less cushioning.
I went out and watched a race that is part of a series my team puts on every year tonight. We hold these 4k races every other week throughout the summer. Tonight it turned out there were some fairly elite guys out there. The guys that won both have posted times that are fast enough to qualify them for this year's Olympic trials (I dunno if their times are recent or not). I also know they both recently ran a 25k road race in which their half marathon split was ~1:05:00 or so. It would have been fun to try and battle it out with them even though they weren't running hard tonight. The next place guys were just my teammates who all ran fairly respectable times. It was definitely fun to watch a race instead of participate in it, its so awesome to see everyone working hard out there.
Today was my day off - finally! My next day off is the week of my big summer race, so I figured I'd celebrate this one with pizza and pop.
nice easy 5.2 miles...forced myself to slow down some...8:25 per mile.
Hey everyone, been out of town for work so i'm getting caught up. It's been all 60 min runs this past week, so anywhere from 8.5-9.5 a day. I've only been back at this for three weeks after a two week break and my knees are already starting to hurt :( and one look at my log wil tell you that i came back VERY slowly so thats not the problem either. I may have to stay under 60 miles for a few weeks but i know everything will eventually settle in and get up to some decent mileage.
I know it will be a while but i cant wait to get back to workouts on the track, i feel really sluggish. Yesterday about 45 min into my run i ran by a high school and decided to do a couple quick laps just for fun. It did not feel good at all, and i only did 800m!
Hi all,
Running the Run Melbourne Half tomorrow as well. Should be ok as I have tapered. But always feel as though I should be doing more and I lose the Kms in the legs.
Came down with a cold last night so hopefully rest today and I'll be ok. Gfinkelde I will be at the sporting spirit Marquee! Good Luck
Not a great run tonight - 6 miler, 56 mins. Overcast and muggy in Vancouver, not nice for the run although it was good vis so when I was high up I got a beautiful view of Mt. Baker in one direction and Vancouver Island in the other.
Run itself not so good. Legs were quite sore and tired, had a bit of stitch every now and then (nothing major tho), indigestion and then I felt so bloated and heavy at the end I had to stop about 200m from home and walk.
I don't think I ate anything bad... lots of fruit and veg today in fact! Ah well, I 'm kickboxing tomorrow, maybe a bit of a bike ride (gentle), Sunday I am working all day so no sports and a gentle run on Monday me thinks. I'm icing the shins now.
