(sigh) Didn't go as well as I hoped. I ran 2 miles and after the first mile, I started getting shooting pains from my shoulder blade down to my elbow. It was kind of weird. By the time I got home and was showering, I got two or three more that went down to my thumb. Now it's back down to a dull pain again. I'm icing and I guess I won't be doing my long run on Sunday. AHHHHHHRRRRRRGGGGGG!
Do you guys think a massage will help or hurt my situation?
burgalurg - that sounds like medical attention should be being sought. I wouldn't go near a massage until I knew more about the underlying cause.
Frosty this morning. Those half gloves (more for weight training I think) don't quite cut it when it's like that. Covered 8k in 45 and a half minutes. (10.56kph - 5:40 per km) Edging closer to the 11kph mark for my steady state running which I'd be a lot happier with. (Of course I'd be delirious with 15kph but let's get real!)
Just got back from 10 days in France, and thankfully managed to discipline myself to keep the training going. It was harder than I thought.
Did a 27km, 10km, a 14km and an 18km run... all a bit slower than normal due to both heat and "motivational issues..."
It was about 30C, and a bit humid most days. So the first few runs were quite traumatic, compared to training in milder scandinavian climate. But by the end of the holiday I was pretty much acclimitised. Diving into a pool at the end and knocking back a couple beers afterwards seemed to help too.
I think I was pretty much the only person running though. It's pretty much just people on racing cycles down south.
LexB - great stuff! What's your next race then? Up at 4.00am is insane!
I seemed to have managed to shave off a couple of kgs which is good too. Running with a 2kg camel back (seeing how fast I feel without it) has convinced me that anything that can lighten the load will help finish this marathon. So if I can get 1-2 more kgs lighter in the next month or so I'll be cruising (yeah right)
Surprisingly, I felt good yesterday and actually went to the gym and worked out for 60 mins. I printed a training plan (Runner's World) for my marathon in November, will not be able to follow it exact but at least I will do the tempo and my goal pace at the recommended miles.
This morning, I still felt a bit sore but did 3 miles at my goal pace hope to pump it up as the weeks go by. I've never used a race plan before, I normally just run at any pace I feel comfortable - I'm a bit confused with the words of the plan. They do give you the meanings of the acronyms but what does (3miles 4x100 S) means? I know the S=Strides but the 4x100?
ericjacquie,
4X100 sounds like repeats to me...run 100 Meters- 4 times. 100 sounds too short to me though. I'm using Hal Higdon's intermediate training plan...really simple...various lengths runs, no repeats or hills.
junkie i like your plan,."no hills",.except thats all there are where i usually run.lol..well,.put in 6 easy scenic yesterday to relieve some stress and try and work thru this calf problem,. did another 6 today and i think it finnally loosened back up,.still not sure what i did, but it sucked nonetheless,. gonna start back with 10-12 tommorrow and if it holds i will be back on for 18 sunday,.crossin my fingers,. too late in the cycle to miss any long runs now..
burgalurg that defintely sounds like mri time,.i wouldnt push it again till u get it checked out,. dont want to do any more damage to it,.go see the doc so you can get back in the game as soon as possible safely..
kdogg you are the "shoe guru",.my new balance 859's that i just bought hav been pretty good,. other than being heavier,.there is sooo much cushion in them that my feet are starting to sweat around 10-12 miles,.never had this problem with my other nb 892's ,.what would you recommend for 1--dryness (if thats possible),. and 2- odor control?????
Pappy, "no hills" is a relative term. Living in the Tennessee Valley, I'm right up against the mountains. Therefore, there will be hills. Slow 150 ft climbs/declines are ok...it's the 300ft steep hills that I'm trying to avoid!
Well, I'm looking forward to an EASY 6 miles this afternoon (HOT). I'm looking forward to Saturday, when I can do a long run in the early morning.
hey hey, thanks for the support folks! Just found out today that our team won the best team name... hurrah (it was 'chafed junk' with a 1-800 got chafed junk sign in the windows most of the runners seemed to find it fairly amusing).
I am now in training for my kickboxing grading which is tomorrow night (Phew) I have had two fairly hard kickboxing sessions today and yesterday and will no doubt be worked tomorrow.
I would really like to go to my running club tonight but I'm not sure if I need a longer recovery time. I would join a beginner group for an easy session - not my usual run. My muscles are still fairly tight, and my knees and feet a little sore - but not 'uh-ho' painful if you know what I mean. It's just the wear and tear me-thinks. I've read the other messages about 1 day rest per mile run for 1/2 and full marathons - is it the same rule of thumb for relay races? I did about 17 miles over 24 hours with about 4-6 hours rest between legs. Any suggestions?
Did fartleks for the first time in a while yesterday. with 1 min resting jog in bewteen we did 1 min, 2min, 3min, 4min,5 min, 4 min, 3 min, 2min 1min efforts. Managed to run about 7.8km in that time so was going a good clip. Felt shattered in the legs half way through, and then the body died not long after. Managed to finish pretty well though.
Struggling a bit with riding induced motivational issues. Seems I am having to force myself to go on my long runs. Would prefer to be riding. Once I get going I am fine. Hopefully it is a Tour de France hangover
Back out on the bike again on Sunday and tonight. 48 mile group ride on Sunday. I tucked in behind a tandem and they flew! 35 miles this evening after work. Still don't trus my knee not to cause me pain if I run. Still avoiding going to the doc as I don't really want to do surgery.
Lex - sounds like you had a great time on the relay. Never tried anything like that. Closest I ever came was a 6 hour relay that my cross country team did back in HS. But that was ALL on the track.
Been out of sync for a week. I was not feeling well last week and I slacked off. I think I pushed too hard and needed a break. I am back on track with a cross training workout today. It felt good to sweat again.
pappypage - haha, its not often I get called the shoe guru. Thats my boss!! Anyway, as far as the starting to sweat part I don't think that is caused by the cushioning, but from the mesh construction of the shoe. From what I can tell the 892s are fairly breathable, whereas the 859 is breathable, but just not as much. Add to that the fact that it has gotten hotter since you ran in the 892s and then that makes you sweat. Either way, it doesn't matter. If I were you, I would invest in some quality running socks (socks with NO cotton). Personally I use Balega's Hidden Comfort sock. This stuff pulls the sweat from your feet which keeps your feet dry - which in turn reduces blisters and stuff like that. As silly as it sounds, this really does work.
As far as the odor control goes, my suggestion would be to make sure you are properly drying your shoes after you run (by getting the good socks, you will be on the way to doing this). Also, you could put newspaper in your shoes after your runs, this really helps get rid of sweat. Other than that, I would maybe recommend getting one of those odor balls or (as much as I hate them) one of the Dr. Scholls odor eating inserts.
hope this helps
Been a while.... First of all, ex-k1w1, I envy every bit of frostiness you are getting. I haven't stopped sweating in about three weeks!!! Summer is in full swing here in Michigan!!! 85-90 degrees with 80+ percent humidity. LexB, great job on your race. It sounds like it was a lot of fun.
Running is going ok here. 5.77 miles before work today. 14 miler last week for my long run. I have a 16 miler this week. Gotta get back to work now, boss is looking over my shoulder.
ericjacquie - Strides are where you accelerate up from your steady state running to about 90% of effort, hold for a short distance and then slow back down to your steady state. The whole cycle is supposed to last for about 100m. The acceleration and deceleration should be about 20m each, the 90% effort about 60m. The intention is to work on leg speed and form without the stress that a full blown repeat puts on your system. It's also a good way to shake out a bit of tightness in the legs. The whole workout (3 miles with 4 x 100S) means that you should throw in 4 x 100m strideouts in the middle of a 3 mile run. You should put in 2 to 3 minutes between each strideout to let your heart rate settle down in between.
I ran an easy 5k today. Slowly building back up again. Don'twant to rush things.
Hey everybody, Just when I get started, I caught some vicious bug that put me down for the last few days. I got in a decent run Sunday morning (7 mi just under ten minute miles), came home fell into bed and didn't get up until today.
The plan is to head out this evening for a couple miles on the treadmill just to see how it feels. Long run scheduled for Sunday and I hope I'm up for it.
Sounds like alot has been going on while the computer was off. You guys are really an inspiration and make me want to keep moving.
tenminute - hope you get to feeling better soon.
ex-k1w1 - thanks for explaining strides. i was also a bit confused about them.
Wow - I just found this forum so I figured I'd do my first post. My family is tired of listening to me discuss my running so this looks like a better place to get support...
. Anyway, I hadn't run seriously for many years and by last Dec. I was at about 209lbs (I'm 5'9", 47yo). So on Dec. 28th, 2007, I started running (actually walking at that time) and I've been at it 5-6 times per week ever since (I've exercised 85% of all days since Dec. 28th). I'm a little shy of 700 miles for the year and my weight is down to about 174.
I ran my first race since high school at the end of June - the SeaFair Marathon Relay. The team did well and we finished with an overall time of about 3:30. I only had to run 1/4 of the marathon since we had a 4 person team but I did my 6.55 miles in a little over 52 mins for a pace of 8:01/mile - I was pleased with myself. So pleased in fact, that I'm entering two more races this year. I'll be in the Leavenworth Marathon with a 6-person relay team. I'm also going to enter the Seattle Marathon and run a 1/2 Marathon. I'm shooting for 1:45.
So, I'm training quite regularly (145 miles for July). Yesterday was weights and interval training (3 miles each in 7 mins with about 4 mins rest between). Today was a 6.2 mile pace run at about an 8:15 pace. After the Seattle 1/2 marathon, I plan to do another 1/2 marathon in Feb (the Surf City in Huntington Beach CA - I'll need to see some sunshine after that long winter in Seattle). Then probably will do a full marathon in June, 2009. The races will (I hope) keep me motivated to stick with the running. Next time a short post with just the details for that day.
Had cricket training last night and we did a ridiculousn amount of work!!!. Sprints with gear on, push ups, sit ups, punching bags the lot. Made it bloody hard to actually train!!! Was concerned about the salty tasting liquid coming from my brow!!!
Normal running session tonight
Welcome Rogerbum. Know how you feel about the family tuning out when discussing running.
15/7 double today. I haven't really been posting much lately because my training is pretty much the same week in and week out. Since I run for time rather than miles I don't really have route PRs or anything interesting like that. Although I will say there is a 5k this weekend, and I am entered in it. So maybe that will yield an interesting story
Hi All,
Welcome Rogerbum - yes my family are truly over it. although to their credit - make signs saying "Go Mum" and stand in the cold rain to cheer me on! This place is great o feel part of a great big running family.
I am in Sydney for work so I got up and ran down George St and over the harbour bridge - sun shining, water sparkling - magic. 5.2kms before the office grind. One of my best runs since returning from holidays
Haven't posted in a while so to recap I did 15 sat then 10sun-tue. Today was my first tempo of the summer, i was fairly happy with it. I did 4 miles in 5:10, 5:15, 5:20, 5:10 for a 20:55 staying pretty relaxed.
16km last night. Felt weak in the legs. Hope I recover for the weekend.... I need a yoga session to stretch everything out....it's been too long. Ran with a friend, I think he was surprised that i was running so slowly....but each training session has to leave you in shape to do the next one.
Junkie_99: I too like the simplicity of the hal higdon plans. I'm also doing the intermediate plan, to be honest, I would struggle to throw in any fartlek or fast runs. I am starting to feel the effect of weeks of running/general fatigue.....hmm...right before the 5 toughest weeks of the program....
Kdogg, I think I am gonna invest in some of those socks... the American dollar is right about where it should be for the rest of us to buy stuff cheap from the US...
Welcome rogerbum - i too empathise with the family apathy. Well done on the consistency of training, for having the good sense not to push too hard too soon and for setting some great goals.
Decided to be reasonably scientific about finding my maximum heart rate and followed a method outlined in the latest Aussie Runner's World mag. 10 - 15 min warmup, a few strides, a 400m at tempo then a final 400 starting fast and pushing harder every 100m so the last 100 is absolutely flat out with nothing left in the tank. Managed to crank it up to 179 and couldn't get it to go any faster. Seems to fit in with my last measured rate of 186 from about 10yrs ago. Fitted an 8k run around that. A day off tomorrow then an 8k time trial on Sat morning.
Hi all,
I've been absent from the discussion threads for a while. Although my running hasnt stopped. Been going from strength to strength. I am continuing my build up towards the Melbourne Marathon. My long runs now hitting 30kms - I'm starting early in the mornings to get the run out of the way for the day and it is pitch black and freezing!!
I have also been doing speed work with a group and ran 16.35 in a tan time trial (4km) last week. Not bad progress considering I ran that in 18.18 6 weeks ago! Next race I have booked is the Sandy point half. Never been so comfortable knowing I will most likely be able to push the pace in the back half and hopefully go under 1.45 for the 21km.
I have just dropped my 16kg since I started running in December and cant believe how far I have come with my running. I never believed I could actually do a half marathon let alone now realising that I will do the Melb marathon and do it reasonably!
I really do believe absolutely anyone can do this if they really want to. Anything is truely possible!
Great stuff Harro. Sandy point is at the bottom of my street so might be tempted to watch you run around. t is reasonably flat so you will have a very good chance of doing a fast time. 16.35 is a good clip around the tan particularly given the improvement in such a short time.
Legs felt really heavy today so just did a slow jog. Have been doing a bit of work recently so it was probably good to have a rest. Quick ride home afterwards - nice tail wind, fast time. Have a good weekend guys
Haven't been running since the race! Boo... I miss it, but I have had some pretty intense kickboxing sessions each day, building to my grading which was last night - finally made it to high orange - hurrah! My body has felt very fatigued and the kickboxing hasn't really helped but it had to be done. My knees are still quite tender and are cracking a lot, my hamstrings feel a lot better now but my feet are still a little sore too. I'm amazed how much the race (and the kickboxing training) have knocked out of me.
Today I am having a well earned day of rest! No exercise of any kind, maybe a bit of yoga later on but that's it, a nice long sleep in and plenty of nice food as it's my birthday today and I think I have earnt it. I am glad to be starting 29 in the best shape of my life!!
Tomorrow I am going to aim for a very gentle run, then start building again and get back on course with my 1/2 marathon training. I have decided to try and fit two half marathons in this year if I can - one as a general intro and the other I want to set myself a time target. I was hoping to do the North Shore (North Vancouver) and Victoria (Vancouver Island) 1/2's but they are just a day apart!! Am now thinking of North Shore (Oct 13) and Seattle (Nov 30) 1/2's -does that sound reasonable? or too much?
happy birthday lexb,. and congrats on the orange belt..
kdogg i ordered 3 different pair of the socks last nite,. 2nd day air so i am hoping to try a pair on my long run sunday,. i will experiment and see which works best,. i never new there were soooo many types of specialty socks,.thx for the advice,.
12.3 miler tonite,.the calf held up great so i guess i am back on track for oct marathon,. but the humidity killed the rest of me,.lol.i am on vacation all next week so i am greatly looking forward to being able to go out around 4 or 5 am and run,.these last 3 weeks hav all been midday or afternoon runs for me, and i can use a break from the humidity. gonna shoot for 17-18 long run on sunday,.i hav 4 weeks to lock in race registration,.told myself i hav to hit 20 mile long before i lock it in,.it will be close.
Welcome giggles32006! I am envious of the heat. It's only around 15 degrees here at the moment.
Today was a cross training PT day - some legs strengthing, wobble board, core and calves. A good session before the weekend long run,
Have a good weekend all.
Took it easy this week. Did a fast run 3 miles (much faster than my usual pace). My club is having a 18 mile practice run tomorrow....I may consider attending.
8k Tan Time Trial this morning. Cold and a bit breezy. Covered it in 37:42 which was slightly better than I thought it would be considering my broken training of late. Feeling good and strong and eyeing up the VRR Princes Park half marathon on the 24th August. I'll only be doing it as a training run as I won't be up to racing that far just yet but it's my club so I want to attend. I was also looking at the Sandy Point 1/2 but that's just a wee bit too soon. Good luck with that one Harro8. We'll cross paths at one of these events soon.
Enjoy the weekend everyone!
welcome giggles,.always great too see new enthusiasum , and new faces. congrats on the new distance dan.keeler.
pouring rain here this morning,. had a tempo 6-7 miler planned for 0500 am ,. guess i will be stuck hitting the road in the humid afternoon again,.hopefully tommorrow morning will be clear for long run,.goal is 17-18,. will be final test of calf muscle,.(crossing fingers),.on vacation all week,.my son is joking with me telling me i should spend it running doubles every day like kdogg. lol.my reply...yea right , in my dreams(sarcastically,)..lol..my wife is telling me to relax,..yea right....i will be out around 0400 everyday to beat the heat and be back in time to keep her happy,.and to be honest she is very supportive, and without her support i couldnt continue my training,.so kudo's to all the family members that have patience and kind words of support for the runners in their family,
15 miles today in 2 hours 13 minutes (8:52 pace). My running has been a bit off schedule due to my work responsibilites. So I have put in a few longer runs with days of rest in between. I did 4 miles Monday, 12 on Wed, and 15 today. I won't be able to run again until Tuesday and then I'll try to get back into the normal training routine.
Welcome to all the newcomers!!
Just finished Beach to Beacon 10k race today. My goal was to finish in the top 1200 and I finished in the top 1000 / 5248. I also finished in the top 100 of my age group. I didn't get a medal or money or such, but I feel like I'm on top of the world with my result. Lets just say the elite runners finished about 20 mins ahead of me. I think I could have shaved a couple of minutes off my time if I wasn't trying to run in and around 2500people at the start of the race. Word to the wise if you run a 6 to 8 min pace get closer to the front of the line. If you plan on walking; please for the rest of us stay at the back.
Top Elite runners were
Men: 1st Ed Muge 27:53, 2nd Maregu Zewdie 27:54, 3rd Kiplimo Kimutai 27:59, 4th Duncan Kibet 28:22
Women: 1st Andrea Sorgato 29:52, 2nd Edith Masai 31:56, 3rd Luidmila Biktasheva 32:04, 4th Yuri Kano 32:17
5k race today in 15:40 (5:02, 5:03, 5:04, 31). It was wayyyyyyyy too hot and humid to run fast. Everyone suffered from slow times. I am decently pleased with the race because I didn't drop my mileage and still haven't done much speedwork. I think when it comes time to race this course again on Thanksgiving, some very fast times will be had :)
I'm gonna go out and run a few miles (six) in a little bit when it cools down , so that'll give me 15 for the day...yay I guess
KDogg - for this 47 yo - 5K in 15:40 IS FAST....
Anyway - I did 6.2 yesterday in 56 mins and 9.9 today in 1:30. Today's run was supposed to be about 7 miles but unexpected trail detours added about 3 miles more. The weather was perfect - overcast and mid 60's but the trail detour was VERY poorly marked. On the bright side, I left my car at a wine shop/bar last night and ran over there today to retrieve it. So detour or not, I have no choice but to get there. A glass of rose and a fruit and cheese plate later and I was ready to drive home. It's good to have a goal to run to.
I mapped 8.91 miles for my run this morning at 10 min a mile pace. Took a different route this morning.
