Ran in a 5K race today (21:10). I'm happy with it for a 46 year old who didn't do any race specific training and only a couple of sessions of speedwork.
Ran in my Brooks Defyance shoes. Would it be worth it to invest in some racing flats? Would they make a difference?
hi all, ran in the rain after work Friday - 6.2kms, nice and slow. Legs felt like lead - not one good song appeared in my ipod shuffle. was one of those runs i was glad to see the back of. Rest day Saturday - ready for 15kms Sunday.
20m long run - my legs were heavy the whole time, it probably isn't necessary to say that this sucked. I'm happy I got it in though
Gilly - if you want to get faster for your races, racing flats will make a noticeable difference. Based on track workouts, elites estimate they would run a 10k 20-30 seconds slower if they raced in trainers that are 6 oz heavier than their racing flats. For you, it would probably take off more time since the 1% of your time would be a higher number of seconds.
congrats gilly32!! thats an awesome time,.
20 miler this morning , longest ever for me,. wahooo!! , felt really good and still had a couple miles in my legs left,.downed an energy drink at mile 7 to try it out,. tasted horrible and heavy on stomach. waiting for gels to arrive in mail. will try them next sun on long run,.today i will lock in race registration for oct marathon,. felt good enough at 20 to feel confident i can cover the distance in reasonable time by race day barring any injuries.
Good job, aldiara88. It's a great feeling, isn't it?! I absolutely love running in Chicago. It seems like every race runs along the waterfront!
My training is coming along well. I had my long run on Thursday. Planned 18 miles, then felt okay, so I wound up running from home to my office, which is a 19.88 mile trip. Had I known I was so close to 20 miles, I would have run around the building once! My wife was a little surprised when I called and asked her to come pick me up :}
Yesterday, I planned a 7 mile run with 4miles at tempo pace. I ran with a guy I work with, who is much faster than I am. He pushed me a lot harder than I would have pushed myself. My splits were 8:02, 8:04, 8:05, and a final mile at 7:46! I know that doesn't sound fast for a lot of you, but I'm ecstatic about it!
I have two rest days, then an easy run. Keep running.
Nice Work Aldiara88 - it is a fantastic feeling to cross the finish line!!
I had a very lazy Saturday watching the Olympics, so gettin gout in the cold windy weather of Sunday was a rude shock. I ran with my friends who had mapped a nice 17km course for us - and we ran down by the Docklands - which was a bit grey - but surpirsingly pretty for a winters day.
We ran in 1hr.40mins - which was a bit slow, but the wind sometimes felt like we were going backwards - so I guess not too ba.
Ready for the Sandy Point Half now!
Well I ran a 20 miler yesterday, at 1min over marathon pace (as dictated by training plan). This time I shoved a new energy bar in my face after 8km, and then ran along trying to stuff these sour norwegian jelly babies down so I didn't run out of puff. It seemed to work ok, but I will need to work out my "nutrition" for race day in Berlin.
It's a bit weird. All the information I can get shows that it is merely water and fruit availible along the course. No mention of engery drinks, gels etc. Which is weird for such a big marathon as Berlin.....
Those of you who have run some longer races....did you run along with your own gels, engery bars etc?? If so, what on earth did you carry them in?
ExKiwi - good to hear things are starting to feel good. At least you know what you have to do to get back into racing form. i.e. you have been there before.
Aldiara88 - I've run 5 different marathon courses, the two biggest being the Rotorua Marathon in New Zealand, and the Gold Coast here in Australia. None of them have ever had energy drinks or gels; presumably the cost would be prohibitive, not to mention the fact that a lot of people would probably be tempted to use them for the first time during the race, with potentially disastrous (and messy) results.
Ran 8k in cold and rainy conditions this morning. (Only a couple of degrees above freezing.) Not often I'm tempted to get out both the running tights AND the windbreaker jacket. Distinctly uncomfortable when I finished.
Was planning on an easy 8 miles at 6:55 pace but at about the 3.5 mile mark it started to pour (should have turned back at mile 2 when the thunder and lightning started)Then I sped it up to around 6:30 pace for the last 3.5 miles.
Gonna probbably do 8-10miles tomorrow at cross country then do some speed work (probably 15X200m at 33-36 sec. pace) then lower body strength training. Gotta really get my 5k time down by the season opener, my goal is to go under 19:00
CONGRATS ALDIARA! What a rush and what an achievement! You must be walking on air : ) (well when you can walk again anyway) - what's going to be your next challenge?!
I totally slacked off this weekend - tsk tsk! Last time I promise! I was s'posed to go for a 9 miler, but I just completely bailed. So 6 miler this morning, this week marks the start of my full 1/2 training (hah, if that makes any sense). I have a 1/2 plan I downloaded from the runners world site but I think I will have to adapt it quite a bit. For example the long runs aren't as long as I have been doing and my schedule is all over the place. Plus this one doesn't put a run on before your long day and I have heard that Hal Higdon suggests a tempo the day before your long which I think I will aim for.
Anyhoo... no more slacking for me! Todays 6 miles in about 56 mins - 8:50 pace ish which is good, sort of what I was aiming for. (altho Kdogg with his 6 miles in 31 mins makes me blush). I'm consistently under 9min/miles at the mo which what I want at medium distance. Had a bit of stitch half way and some gruelling climbs. But all okay.
Tried my lovely new shoes today (NB1062's) and they're actually a little odd! My left foot went numb (I loosened the laces just in case) and I can sort of feel the impact on the inside of each foot. Maybe it's just a breaking in thing!
Thanks, KDogg, for the advice on the Racing Flats. I'll get some prior to my next race.
Congratulations on your 20 miler. Did you do it nonstop? I'm working my way up to 20, adding a mile each week. This week's long run will be 16 miles.
long day of doubles for me...12 miles in the morning and 11 miles in the evening. I kinda got carried away on the second run, oh well. This week I'm bumping my mileage up a bit, so why not get started on the right foot? :)
LexB - you make me laugh, haha. Keep up the good work yourself
Gilly - no probs on the advice man. And yea, the 20 miler was continuous (well with the exception of water stops). I'm doing a marathon build up for my fall season to see how my body responds.
Short and dirty today. 6k with 3.5k tempo in the middle. Cold again (okay you people in the Northern States and others closer to the Arctic circle - but it still FEELS cold.) but at least the rain stayed away.
LexB - How long is your 1/2 buildup? I'm going to New Zealand for a week in late October and it just happens to coincide with the Auckland Marathon weekend so I'm registering for the 1/2 on Nov 2nd. Good luck with yours.
Hi all,
Ramping up my training for the Melb Marathon now.
Sat was a medium pace 12km in 1hr, Sun 30km long run on hard hills (ouch, ouch, ouch!) in the rain, hail, wind and puddles - I got so wet! Still at the 21km mark I felt really really good so good signs. My wife said I was blue when I got home. Felt like I was going to throw.
Took Monday off (very sore) but back on it today for the group session this morning at the Tan. Did fartleks with the groups quickest runner and managed to stick with him until the last 800m. Then did another slow 6 (quads very sore up those hills still).
Now doing a 12km medium tomorrow, strength session Thursday and a 7km Sat. That will be 101kms from last sunday to this sunday. Feeling strong!
All ready for the sandy piont half. Cant wait!
You are flying Harro. Well done aldaira, great running. Amazing to think it wasnt that long ago you were a newbie to this caper.
Aftr an ok long run on the weekend, I did fartleks tonight. solid 2km, then 2x1km, and 2 x 500m. Very happy with my pace. Consistent throughout al distances. Just over 8mins for the 2km,3.52 and 3.59 for the 1km and 1.52 and 1.55 for the 500m.
Had a great ride home as well. Into the wind, and had a very quick average speed, considering I got stuck at some lights. Beingon the bike is starting to feel like my natual way to move around
Hi All - giggles32006, I have to agree with steve921. For some strange feeling there is something really lovely about running in the rain - apart from it cooling me, it also seems really freeing to just be out in the elements. so my vote is for the outdoors any day!
Today I boxed instead of running - great cardio work out before my plane flight to Sydney - luggage lost on the way - grrr.
Aldiara - I am running in the cold now - so for carrying a gel, or Gu - i tuck it into my glove on my palm - it ends up a little warm - but okay. In the summer - I use a safety pin to attach to my shorts, but fold the top over so it sits on the inside, and doesnot flap too much. When I need more than 1 - over 2.5 hours - I use the bra - trusty as stuff does not fall out of it!!
Good luck Harro - we may run by each other at Sandy Point. I'll be the slow one!
KDogg - you must be in an area with great weather, to be logging those kinds of miles in August. Nice going.
Giggles: stay with it. I agree that running in the rain can be invigorating. But it's not for everyone. If it's not your cup of tea, head to the gym. If you run on a treadmill, incline it at least 1/2% to better simulate running outdoors.
Rest day for me. This is a recovery week. I'm running only 30 easy miles.
Those of you who are neutral runners, I'd like to know what your favorite shoes are.
Happy Running, everyone!!
Cri524:
I'm no expert, but I think you would be pushing it. You have only been running consistently for 6 weeks. Also, I'm not a fan of increasing your weekly mileage more than 10%. Obviously, I don't know your age and fitness level, but I do believe that to run a race in 4 weeks that doubles your current mileage will put you at risk of injury and, at the least, fatigue for your race. Keep in mind, you really on have 3 weeks, because that last week, you must taper some for your race.
I would keep training and look to November/December for your 1/2 marathon.
Happy Running!!
5 mile pace run this morning, 7.27 pace,..good for this old man. decided to try short fast pace today,.13 tommorrow,.13 thu,.6 track interval sat and 22 mile for long on sun. am starting to jump 2 miles every week on long, so i figuered i would cut tuesdays mileage back to allow a little longer recovery from sun.
simmoT; the gels are airbourne and on the way,. can"t wait to giv them a shot,. the nutremant drink i used last sun worked great,. just tasted bad,.hoping the gels work as well. felt great after the 20,.i think you were right on the "fuel gauge empty" call. ty.
Steve - was tempted to do the Melbourne one, but cant justify spending $70 on a 10km race. In November we have the great race series. Will have Mottram and Gerbrasalisase running in it I think. Would be great to run the same race as them - even though they might not be able to keep up with me!!!
I have the issues with Gels. I have a great pair of running shorts but they dont have pockets. I then have to wear sport shorts so I can carry my gels around. Which is not that much of a hassle.
When is the Sandy Half guys. I will probably wander down Abbott st and have a look. I live about a km from the start.
Im not sure whos running in the NYC one and its pretty odd that it is 70$ in melbourne when its $35 in NYC. Gerbrasalisase is an amazing runner I would love to see him in action.
Kdogg-
Just realized that 6m in 31:57 is 5:19 pace which is a second slower then my freshman single mile time which was 5:18, thats amazing
9 miles tonight at 8:17 per mile. That's faster then my pace planned for my marathon. Felt really good the whole way, even on the .85 mile/250 ft climb just past mile 7. I was able to keep up my pace with shorter strides all the way up.
Hey, I'm missing someone on here....I wonder where Rememberly is??
Gilly - haha, saying the weather in southern Indiana is great is laughable!! This humidity sucks!!!!! But lately, its been at least bearable. I wake up pretty early to run and then run pretty late in the evening. I'm moving up to the Indiana/Michigan border this coming weekend, so hopefully the cooler temps will help out my training some.
Steve - haha, it just takes time man. When I was a freshman in high school I ran 5:12 in the mile and like 20:30 in the 5k, so you already have my 5k time beat. Just keep working and you'll get where you want to be at, especially with the great training you've been putting in.
Today's workout was great. My original plan was to do 10x 5:00 at tempo pace (~5:20-5:30/mi pace) with 1:00 recoveries. I started out pretty good, but then things got pretty out of control. I was running on a mile loop over by my grandparents house and on the 6th interval I ran a 5:15 mile. On the 7th, it was a 5:05. The crazy thing was that I wasn't feeling too tired and didn't really feel any lactic acid building. Maybe my fitness is way higher than my racing indicates
So I had to stop doing that, because if I didn't I'd probably break down later in the week. So after that I just switched over and did an 18:00 tempo run to finish off the run. This was a great workout and a huge confidence booster for me. Then I doubled back for seven miles in the evening with some friends.
Oh man... seriously, why do I always have to post after Kdogg?! Sheesh.
So I ran 15 km in... like.. 20 mins... YEAH RIGHT! Worth a shot huh?
Back at run club tonight - missed three weeks, made it to the penultimate sesh for this clinic (just as my marathon training hots up!!). City block / fartlek repeats (I think 1km, maybe less) so didn't really time, just tried to catch up with the leader! Held my own so pretty pleased. Must have been doing an 8min mile on the 'hard' sections me thinks - at least at the beginning anyway. Was trying to focus on the straight spine and good gait. Increasing speed by increasing cadence (?) - all the technical stuff.
Good session - slightly sore soles of my feet again, the new 1062's were better today although still not the blissful squishyness I remembered from first trying them.
Hi all - I hope to catch up with the Great Race series. Haile Gebreselassie and Craig Mottram in the same series? Absolutely a must see.
Gilly32 - I'm a neutral runner but also reasonably big (85-90kg most of the time) so I use a cushioned shoe. I have loved the Asics neutral cushioned shoes as they have evolved over time; from the humble beginnings of the Gel-101 through to the more recent models. Having said that, I am currently running in Adidas Supernova Cushion and Brooks Radius. The Brooks are still very new and I'm reserving judjement for a few more weeks yet as they are much stiffer than I'm used to but are a good ride. The Supernova I'm very happy with. (Will almost certainly go back to the Asics when these shoes need replacing, so I guess that's my preference!)
Today's run was an 8k steady state run. Still waiting for my timing device to come back.
I ran a nice little 15 mile mid week long run today around the downtown area of my town. I wanted to run around that area one last time before I move away this weekend. Since it was lunch time all sorts of people were off of work and as a result I got tons of awesome looks and cat calls, my favorite!!
129 miles ran for the last seven days - definitely the highest I've ever done and more than I ever dreamed about doing before this year.
KDogg: That is just awesome! No other way to say it.
I did an easy 6 miles today. Still enjoying my recovery week. 12 tomorrow and 16 Friday.
Giggles: Congrats on hittine the 2-mile mark! Stay with it...go longer, even if you have to walk some.
Ex: Investigate the new Brooks Defyance and Glycerin 6. The Glycerin especially has good cushion.
So I made a decision, im going to do the seaside heights half marathon in mid october. Since I can do 10 miles in around 7:05 pace im setting a goal of 1hour 30minutes and 50 seconds, because it is exactly 6:55 pace. I figure if I start increasing my mileage a little more, (Longest ive done is 12 miles but didnt time it) ill be ready for it. Ill also make my tempo runs a little longer.
way to go giggles!..last year at this time i could barely run 2 miles,.and this weekend i am going for 22,.persistence will prevail..
junkie99:...i hav wondered same thing,. i fear his last post (remembereley) may hav been unfortunately true, .he was seriously questioning a "stress fracture" in his foot,. and he hasn't posted since,.hope he's been busy and couldn't post.
kdogg: i swear you can't be human. :-) great job as usual.
8:16 tempo for me today,.nice run, but short,.. had to cut it short due to lightning storm again,.only 6 miles in before the sky started lighting up like the forth of july,.unfortunately, since i drive truck i hav a set limited time to workout and if the weather doesn't cooperate i hav to adjust the training schedule on the fly.
got a new challenge to work on from my son,.2 weeks after marathon we are having race to see who can do 100 pushups non stop the quickest..every time i stop the truck i do 3 -4 quick sets of 25-30 pushups,. figure at least it wil help with core strength even if i loose the challenge.
Hi All,
Had a shocking run this morning - my favourite run in SYdney over the bridge was aweful. I ate out at a restuarant last night, and have eaten something that is not agreeing with my tummy - every time I got into a rythym I felt nauseous, so I walked/jogged for 45 mins to get back to my hotel. It was horrid. Hopefully it will pass, and I can do the 1/2 on Saturday.
I was tempted to do the Nike Run - but reckon $60 is a bit steep for 10kms. We do get a t-shirt, and a concert by the Hill Top Hoods at the end - which would be very cool ( I love the Hoods) but I am not sure that it is worth it - especially when only 20% of our fee goes to the Charity. If it was 50/50 I might have ponied up the bucks.
Well this week is a serious milage reduction week for me. I'll be chasing around our two 1 yr olds while my wife has a girls weekend in smokey old London town....
I'm not likely to run with a double pram so looks like some early mornings next week to make up for it.
It's a good thing acutally. I was feeling pretty good after my 32km run on Sunday. Did a very hard yoga class on Tuesday (first for a while, streched a bit too hard) now I can feel some tenderness in the hamstrings which annoys me a bit.....I tell you, it's quite a balaning act sometimes. Usually I feel fantastic after yoga. This time I did damage.
I think I am gonna try some lukozade gels next week for the long run.
Steve921: Good times mate!
giggles32006, aldiara88 is right: If you keep at it, you will be amazed at the progress you can make. Moderation and consistency...that's the key!
RE: Gels. I guess I am gonna have to find some shorts with pockets.
RE: Socks. I got some of those socks Kdogg was recommending. I must admit, it's like having air-condition feet.... I recommend them (esp. if you run in the heat).
