Wow so much great stuff going on this weekend! Great job guys! I really enjoyed reading about all those marathons.

20x400m today for me. ~90s rest between each with a 5min break after 10. I was very consistent, running the first ten in 70 and the last ten in 69's. We did them on grass out at our rec soccer fields. It was pretty cold/wet/windy out there and with that plus the grass and 3 90-degree turns our times were easily 3 or 4s slower than if they had been on a track. A good solid effort today but nothing kiiler. Still my hamstrings are gonna be sore tomorrow I can already feel it, i took an ice bath afterward so maybe that will help.

Hi Pappypage - great work to finish in such difficult conditions, it seemed each of us who raced this weekend had an unexpected obstacle to contend with - be it weather, or injury, or like me inexperience!

A great post - thanks for sharing, I look forward to us all working out our next goals to continue the journey!

    Cheers,

    Sue

pappypage......I sincerely started crying after reading your post.  That's amazing....and "seeing" another accomplish goals like that is always something that gets me going.  The other day, I watched a video online of people finishing the Chicago marathon and it brought tears to my eyes...just knowing what the did..and knowing that one day...I will be one of those people too....You are SO right..only 1% of the population even attempts this craziness...I'm so proud to say that so far..I am in that 1%!  Also, im no expert or anything...but its seems to me that before you tragedy....you were running some great splits!  i hope I can accomplish those as well!!  I must go back and read your posts on how you did it all  :)

To everyone else who ran....also, thanks for taking the time out to post.  Newbies like me really need to see those kinds of stories...the good, the bad, and the ugly......because it wont always turn out the way we may think..but we dont give up anyways...and thats the beauty of this great sport..:)  A race against yourself

me:  I did another 5 miles today....It's funny...everytime I step outside..im toying with what my workout will be....today..i didnt know which was better  4 or 5.  I know im supposed to take it easy before the 10k...but...5 really didn't feel bad!

Also..halfway through I was thinking to myself...."I think im doing a tempo run right now"  i was running faster than usual..i knew that....but i felt fine.  I kept that pace the whole way and cut a minute off my overall time.  so Im now down to 8:30 min miles.  i would LOVE to be able to keep that in the race on sunday!

Wends i will do 4 miles, thursday....3...then off fri and sat then race day sunday!  Im thinking of adding a few sprints at the end of wendsdays and thursdays run......what do you guys think?  good idea/bad idea?

Tranquil - Congratulations on your training.  You will do wonderful Sunday.  I can't wait to hear the details.  I'll be racing a 5K on Saturday.

If I were you, I would get out and do 1-2 easy miles on both Fri. and Sat. just to get the blood flowing to your legs.  My experience has been that tapering doesn't mean you can't do anything, just very, very easy, miles or you can cross-train.  Personally, I see no need for 2 total days off before a 10K.

Hi everyone and greetings from NZ. Are there any other Kiwis out there??? This is my first post in this discussion. Congrats to everyone who completed marathons last weekend. I can't agree with Tranqil more, the posts are truly inspiring. As for training, I've been off the road for just over a week now after having the worst run ever the Sunday before last. I'm training for the Auckland Marathon on the 2nd of Nov, and set off for a 36K run (my longest yet) early on the Sunday morning and broke down at 3K's. Walked for a K, ran another, and then broke down again - limped 5K's back to my car. It was soul destroying stuff. Since then I've been to the physio a handful of times, have been icing and heating my knee, and have been off the road completely - although I've done a few sessions on a bike at the gym. Tonight was my first run since breaking down. Took it very very cautiously, and did 5K's in 30 minutes. I felt elated just to be back on the road. And back on the road to the marathon on the 2nd. Keep up the running everyone.

congrats Pappypage! Did I miss something? What was your final time?

I've done a couple days of easier runs since I'm winding down (taper) to my marathon in less than 2 weeks. Sunday I ran 8.5 to 9 miles (new track that's .5-.6 miles...not sure it's not on the sat view yet) and Monday, 5.5-6 miles on the same track. Most of my training runs have been on the road...with quite a few hills. It's interesting to see how easy flat courses have become (gives me hope that I'll do well in the marathon) I'm sure I won't have all the split times that Pappy posted, but I'll be sure to post what I can.

Hey folks, firstly congrats everyone who raced - whether you made your time or not, (or whether your plans were scuppered by small children - Pappypage, you have just confirmed my belief that small children should be kept on leashes at all times, I can't believe you have the good grace enough to just dust yourself off and carry on in the face of that, I would have been fuming! you're a legend).

My half marathon was on Monday, I awoke monday morning to torrential rain, how nice. I have discovered my boyfriend is the most patient person in the world after he put up with me throwing several tantrums about my kit and the weather before the race. I can't believe how badly the nerves affect me! ended up being about 200 runners starting the race I think (quite a low key event in North Van). After my painful 12 miler last week I was aiming slow and steady - my goal was simply to finish. But you know me, that little competitive streak won out and I ended up checking my watch and pushing quite hard.

The course was nice (apart from the weather), just the right amount of hills and flats, overall an elevation loss but the odd hill here and there just to take the monotony out of it. I had 3 gu's, one before and two during 45 mins apart and they were brilliant, made such a difference I think. So much better for me than the powerbar gels. Plus they were yummy, especially the chocolate mint! : )

The last mile - especially the last 400m- were the hardest. My finish time was 1:48:17 which I was so happy with - sub 2 hrs was what I really wanted although I know I wasn't supposed to set a time goal. Quite ecstatic. Was also amazed how quickly I got chilled after the race and how tired I was, could not believe how much it took out of me. Lucky for me it was Canadian Thanksgiving so I had a lovely big roast dinner for supper which set me right!

Think I'd like to get a few more halfs in next year and then aim for London 2010. That's the dream.

Hi this is my first post.  This morning, I ran a 4 miler trying to work up to a 5.  I tried the 5 last week and it took it all.  Well, I think the 5 miler went better than the 4 since I did not empty before the run and I might as well have just walked.  Yeah, I'm whining.  I'm not a fast runner yet, but straight out slow running is really discouraging.  Not to mention that hill really hurt my knees.  It's never been this bad, now I have to take a recovery day not planned for.  I like to train in a four day cycle which is three days of runningand then a rest day.  The three days are usually a medium run (2-3 miles), then an endurance run (4+ miles) and then speed drills (intervals).  I upped the ante it used to be 2-4-2 rest, but since improvement stopped and motivation lagged to the point I am suffering now, I had to make the change.

Hi guys! I'm glad I found this thread because I train mostly by myself and have never had a coach/legit training plan (apart from a couple years of highschool and college) and I always enjoy sharing my tactics and getting new ideas from other runners. I've run 4 marathons so far, PR 3:05, and looking to break 3 at Boston this spring. Problem is, I just moved to Jackson, WY and we already got 8" of snow! There aren't a lot of roads around here so getting my usual 100 mile weeks in might be difficult. Winter training tips and treadmill marathon training insight greatly appreciated! Well, here it goes: I usually run at lunch and then after work, so today I did 8.25 easy 8 min pace out and back on the road (trails are slick). Took it easy because the front of my left ankle is tight and feels bruised, probably from trudging through 8 miles of fresh snow on Sunday before I decided to ditch the trails. If the ankle feels decent after work, the plan is a 10+ run out on a road I haven't been all the way down yet. Should be nice to see the snow dusted Tetons at dusk! Happy Running Katie

Katie let me get this straight - you have run 100 mile weeks and have ran a 3:05 marathon? and (according to your profile) you like Mizuno?

sounds like my kind of girl, hahaha

Anyway, I headed over to the track today and did a few miles at tempoish pace. 5:35, 5:27, 5:30, 5:24 with a 400m rest/recovery. Nothing too taxing. I'm gonna race an 8k this weekend and I want to run really fast, so I've been winding down my training and mileage some. My legs felt alright, the breathing was good, my effort felt harder than 5:30 though...I definitely peaked a month ago, but I am positive I can gut out a fast 8k this weekend and then maybe a 5k the week after that.

My weight is getting down again too. I got fat when I moved up here, but now I'm down around 130 again so I'm thinking that means I'm gonna run fast

    Guilty.... with sleep-in remorse.

Hello from Southern California,  I'm going to try to stay as disciplined as possible to keep up with this forum, its actua lly a great motivator; but I'm sure I dont need to tell you all that.  I've run the L.A Marathon 7 times and am prepping for an 8th.

Anyway, Guilty Guilty Guilty..................Its so easy to list all of the reasons not to run when its 4:45 in the morning and your alarm goes off, you can complain about your lack of sleep, or you can consider how hard it would be to get up and find all of your gear, your shorts, your shoes....I think the batteries might be low on my MP3 player...on and on and on.  I found an excuse this  morning, one that made me consider it three times over, looking for any weak points in my resolve.  None were found so I hit snooze and drifted back to sleep.

Its hard to consider just how cruddy you can feel later in the day without your run, but here I am mid-way through my day, I feel tired, laxy and an exaggerated 10 Lbs heavier than normal; I'm calling it sleep-in remorse and it sucks.

Lessons learned; for today anyway......its always worth running, because thats what I can do well, something that no one but myself has control over, and because of that I have to answer only to myself when I've failed to allow me that.

And its sucks to be in sleep-in remorse, maybe I'll run an extra mile for my peace of mind.

3 Mile recovery run last night on the treadmill - two days after my 19 mile long run Saturday.  My knees were hurting pretty bad on Saturday while I was running but felt good last night.  Tonight I ran an 8 mile tempo run in 1hr 10min = 8 1/2 min miles.  I usually shoot for 8 min miles during my tempo runs but my legs were feeling tight.  I am going to take tomorrow off, maybe do some speed work Thursday (Yasso 800's) and then take Friday off before another long run Saturday (probably only 15 this week).

25 days until my first marathon.  I'm really starting to feel the pressure now.  I want more than anything to stay healthy in the next few weeks.

Just 5.75 miles today on the treadmill.  One mile at 9:10 to warm up then 3 miles at 8:30.  1/4 walk, then a mile at 8:00 mins overall (1/2 at 8:30, 1/4 at 8:00 and a 1/4@ 7:00).  Then a 1/2 mile cool down walk.  Today was at least a day that started to get me back close to my normal runs of a couple of months ago.  Since I was in Europe for 3 weeks in Sept, on other travel the next 2 weeks and injured for a week after my race of 10 days ago, I've been on a low confidence streak.  For the first 6 months of the year, I ran 6 days a week on average and by June was doing 6 miles a day 6 days a week.  After that, things have dropped off to 3-4 times/week.  So today's run was one of those very active "inner voices" run.  That is, I felt I really needed to get back on the horse again and do a decent workout but my head was filled with a combination of self doubt and guilt.  So I decided to do a nice 4 miles at a decent (but not too fast pace) and that's why I did the warm up at 9 and  the next 3 at an even 8:30 pace.

Lately, it seems like it's been much harder for me to make it through the first 25-30 mins to get to my second wind.  It's all psychological so my inner voice spent a lot of time talking to me today.  First it wanted to go faster but I kept telling myself to just hold the pace at 8:30 and see how I feel.  Then I would alternate between feeling OK and feeling tired and spent 50% of my brain time thinking about the post I would write tonight. Around 2.5 miles, I was wanting to slow down but I managed to distract myself with some tunes (Aerosmith - Big 10 inch record came on).  Around 3.25 miles, I broke through and it was clear I could hold pace through 4.  Somewhere in the middle of that I decided I could probably go through 5 but my toes were still bothering me a bit from Sunday's 10 milers so I rested a little after 4 and got on a good pace thereafter.

Anyway,  the point is I was talking to myslef the entire time (in my head) and alternating between low and high confidence.  Sometimes, I can just get in a groove and not think to much at all, other times, my mind is filled with self doubt and is overally active while I'm running.  I'm feeling a need to build my running back up to 5-6 days/week at an average of 6 miles so I can rid myself of the negative thoughts by the end of Nov (first 1/2 marathon, Nov. 30th.)  Anyone else have the days where you keep chatting to yourself in non-productive ways?

Hello rogerbum! I'm new to the site and this post, and have been enjoying reading over everyone's training, remorse and successes. I hear you on the negative thoughts runs! Sometimes I run and it's just a beautiful day with birds, grass and breezes. And then there are days where I worry about upcoming deadlines, or fight people from work in my head. Sometimes after the first mile I can let it all go, but not always.... Wish I could suggest a cool cure (go to your happy place?).

After running a half marathon (hard), how long should you leave it before you start running again? Is there a general rule or is it personal preference? The soles of my feet, knees and lower back are a little sore, I can feel my hamstrings but wouldn't call them sore and the rest of me feels fine. I just don't want to push it!

    runrunrunoc
LexB....Nice pushing it for your half/M, rest is very important, especially if you have a little time.  Your work-up to this point has pushed you a little.  Soak this one in and start your running when you feel comfortable with your aches, just start at an easy pace low level.  Your workouts prior to this and the recovery that your body has established by now should allow you to resume normal running fairly soon.  It just doesnt make sense to try and push yourself to hard,  your half/M is just a step toward your development, learn from it and enjoy.  Wahooo!!!

Firstly, welcome to all the new posters. (Not the ones that go on the wall!)  This thread is really proving to be a great motivator.  I was searching for a running club to go and join locally because I know how much my motivation suffers when not surrounded by like minded runners.  This site, and this thread in particular fills a need in me for sharing the running experience.  So, many thanks to all of you who contribute your thoughts, feelings and love of running!

LexB - I've developed a very good marathon recovery program with the aid of several experts, but the half marathon is quite different.  Basically, you can pretty much resume full training within a few days if you've put in the miles beforehand.  There is no hard and fast rule or even accepted norm for starting training after a half.  One of the reasons half marathons have become so popular in recent years is that you can race a pretty intense half and be back into full training again almost straight away with very little risk of damage.  Having said that, bearing in mind that this is your first race over this distance, take a few days to do some light running and throw in a couple of good stretching sessions and then start training for your next event!

MarkRTC - As you can probably guess from my username, I'm from the land of the long white cloud myself.  I've been a resident of Melbourne since late '99. I was a member of the Papakura Harriers for about 8 years before migrating.  I ran the Auckland Marathon once when it followed the waterfront from down near the ferry terminals out and back twice to the turnaround at St Heliers / Glendowie.  I'm travelling to NZ shortly and will be in Auckland over the marathon weekend so have entered the half marathon.  If you're interested, we can arrange to say g'day (sorry, the Aussie side of me coming through), before or after and then go our merry ways.  Either way, good luck to you for the BIG run.

After cheering on fellow Melbournians on Sunday, I went home and slept for a couple of hours.  No run on Monday or Tuesday due to a heavy cold.  Back into it this morning with what I thought would be a slowish 8k, but which in fact turned out to be my fastest "easy" / "recovery" run yet in 40:05.

The legs have recovered pretty well. I have ridden in to work each day and that has helped no end. Have Round the Bay in a Day on Sunday. 210km ride around Port Philip Bay (the body of water that Melbourne sits on top of). That should be fun!!!

3 miles tommorrow...then.maybe a xtrain or something before the race!

Junkie - Good luck on your "race" this weekend. Heheheheheheheheh

LexB - I agree with ex-k1w1 - you need to return to running, even if it's light stuff.  The half-marathon really doesn't require extended rest.  And remember, your body gets used to a vacation.  This is another reason not to overdo the tapering before any race.  Some misunderstand the difference between tapering and doing nothing!  I hope you have been stretching daily, as this is so very important.

8 easy miles for me today.  10 tomorrow.  Looking forward to racing Saturday.

     Happy Running!

pappypage - nice photos! I didn't realize you ran steamtown! i grew up near Reading, PA and have wanted to run that one for a while, but it just never happened. would you recommend that one? great job, btw. the 10+ miles did happen last night, but it was dark and cloudy. so much for the tetons at dusk. still, it went well, good pace, except the tightness in the front of my ankle came back. ran 3 x this 1.1 mile/500' rise during lunch for a total of 8.25. soreness of the ankle/shin still persists. i've felt this before and it usually cleared up in a couple days so i'll keep chugging along albeit conservatively. considering a brisk run to the gym - lift - run home tonite. cheers.

The worst 5k ever today. Of course, it was league championships to.  I had this cold that just wont go away for about a week now, and its effecting my performance. I got a side stitch at mile 1.  From that point on it was the most painful experience of my life.  That and the cold are not a good match, i was leting kids pass me that I have beaten in dual meets before, i was mad but could not do anything about it.  I ended up running a disappointing 18:48.  I was aiming for 18:15-20.  Somehow i ended up getting 8th place overall and recieved a medal and 1st team all league. After the race was over, we were waiting for the results.  It was a dead die btwn. our 5 man team and another teams 5 guys.  So i all depended on the 6th racer, unfortunately our sixth runner ran 22:20 while theres ran 22:00.  I feel like its partly my fault that I didnt run my expected time, we should have easily taken this meet.  I am happy that I have recieved a medal and am now 1st team all league, but am still disappointed that our team didnt win overall.  Yet there is some controversy and we may still have a chance and tie them and share the title, but its most unlikely.

Five miles on the treadmill tonight.  1 at 10 mins, 1 at 9:00 mins, 2 at 8:28, 1/4 mile walk, 1/2 mile in 3:30, walk a 1/4 mile.  Hip is still bothering me a little but not too bad.  I think it's a pulled muscle that will resolve itself over the next week or so (I rested for a full week last week). 6 weeks or so until my first half marathon (Seattle, Nov 30th) so I need to get back on the regular training "horse" and regain some confidence in my ability to run longer  distances.

13km hilly run (my standard) at 5.15/km (8:25/mile) pace last night.

Pappy Page - I took about 2 weeks off from running straight after the marathon, then took a nice easy recovery run as I started to feel post marathon taper madness (if that even exists) kicking in.....

After that I have pretty much gone back to running whenever the urge strikes me (which seems to be about 3 times a week).

But I have increased the intensity of my runs somewhat which has been really satisfying.  I am aiming for a fast half next spring, and then a new marathon in Dublin next year in about october.

8km tempo run tonight. First 2kms easy, then 6kms at 10K pace. This was the second run since I injured my knee. Was intending to run 10kms, but felt a bit of pain in my hamstring and upper calf and decided that discretion was the better part of valour, so pulled out at 8kms. Glad I went out. Roll on the weekend for a real test. Ex-Kiwi - would be good to catch up. Perhaps at or straight after race pack pick up. Do you know when you intend to pick yours up?

Wow - well done everyone on some fantastic races. It's so cool sitting reading through everyone's experiences. For going out and doing it, a big Congratulations. Also for taking the time to sit down and share your experiences, Thank you!! For all the ones that busted their ass training and continue to do so, fair play to ya:)

Ok so I totally suck. The last run I done was last Wednesday - it was a long one and ever since (well, up till Monday anyway) I've had some serious shin splints. I've never had them before and then along they come (great timing). So I've been doin all the exercises and all, but haven't braved the road yet. My legs feel really good at the mo and well rested but I'm crapping myself in case they come back.

I'm gonna chance a few short ones between now and the weekend.

    Well Done again everyone!!!!!!

gfinkelde - actually you did see me, I was the weirdo taking your photo on Brunton Ave.  (I've got a photo of you to prove it; would you like to see it?)

junkie_99 - Big call; going for a PR 22 yrs later!  Best of luck with that!

MarkRTC - I'll probably be picking up my pack some time on the Saturday but don't know what my movements will be just yet.  Will try to be a bit more specific closer to the time.

pappypage - My marathon recovery works like this:
Week 1: No running!  That means absolutely none.  You can walk or ride or gently cross train but no running.
    Week2: 1/4 of your maximum pre-race mileage.
    Week3: 1/2 of your maximum pre-race mileage.
    Week4: 3/4 of your maximum pre-race mileage.
Week5 and onwards: Whatever you feel like.  By this stage your muscles and other organs should have fully recovered from the stresses of the marathon and be raring to go.  (BTW Hal Higdon has a whole series of training plans built around bridging a gap from between 1 and 8 weeks between running consecutive marathons but for my mind, that's sheer madness!  He also points out that most of these are not based on performance improvement but sheer survival.)  I first became aware of this recovery regimen about 15yrs ago and I have read it again in a running magazine in Australia within the last year so it is still current thinking among many runners.

My training today was a bad idea.  Decided to go with the 800 repeats from my missed schedule on Tuesday and came very close to walking home.  Should've stuck with the tempo.  Never mind.  Worked on my mental toughness instead!

    Thanks everyone.

ex-k1w1:In April, I came within 15 seconds of my PR. Almost zero running for the 22 years, so I'm hoping I can beat 13:15. I ran a 5:45 mile recently, so I'm thinking I might be able to make it.

pappypage: congrats on the time...especially considering the "problem" in the middle of the race. My marathon next week isn't using chip timing, but it's a small race... < 150-200 people.

Steve921: I hate you! LOL almost 2 minutes faster than my PR for a 5k, and you're complaining! Smile After my marathon, I'm going to start doing speed work, and try to get my 5k time under 20 minutes. (current PR is 20:41)

    Good morning everyone!

ex-k 1w1    I think its hilarious you have pictures that people dont even know about!!  I really wish I had pics of me running...Wanna come down to Jersey this weekend and take care of that??  just a *slight* trip away..eh?

pappypage  thanks for the words of encouragement!!  What sucks the most is that everyone ditched out on me..so im going to this race alone...with no one to cheer me on.....Well...at least I have this forum so I dont feel like im running alone.

Gilly  Good luck on Saturday!!  5k was it?

Oh...I meant to ask you guys way yonder....Can someone please tell me what the MCG is?  everyone kept saying how great it was to run into...Id love to know what it is!

So, today i dropped down to 3.25miles.  I havent run only 3 in so long that I had to look up my map again, and I still ran over....lol  BUT..i did it in 8:03 pace!!!  without even trying!  I cant believe ive now dropped my pace down from 9 mins to 8 all in a couple of weeks!  My only fear now is that...i will head on on Sunday with the same pace mentality that i did today..and then crash.  But at least im conscious about it!

pappypage - as for marathon recovery, my two cents are don't run until it feels natural; if you start running again when things are sore or achey, be very aware of your stride and pace, you should not be altering your normal gait at all. if you are, it means your muscles and tendons aren't ready for the work load yet and are trying to compensate and compensation and loss of balance can lead to injuries (i was out for 3 months with IT problems after a marathon a couple years ago, since that one i've been much more cautious about resuming running and haven't had any post marathon problems, even managed to run 2 in one month - which i concluded was also not a good idea!) tranquil21 - sounds like you're ready to tear it up this weekend, don't worry, just 'trust your training.' just make sure you don't go out at like a 7 min pace because of all the adrenaline and other runners around you. good luck! junkie - what race are you running? those small ones can be really fun! so, today I AM NOT RUNNING! the shin is still tender and i'm and emphatically posting that to make sure i don't run! its better in the long run, no pun intended. i'm planning on running a turkey trot for thankxg, then the next race i have my sights set on is Boston, so its smarter to be conservative when i have the time to spare rather than injure myself for the next couple months. this has always been the biggest challenge for me as a runner - being conservative. i would run all day every day if my body would allow it! p.s. i'm using safari on a mac, that might have something to do with the weird posting...

    labasheeda1014,.  simmoT, and ex-k1w1,.

i guess the consenus seems to be pretty strraight forward between all of you,. i had read thru higgdons plan and was a little leary of it. ex...i was looking at 25% week 1, 50 %week 2, ..75% week 3 ,. then full speed ahead on week 4,.. but after your advice and the others i guess i was missing  "no running" 1st week..,i did go very easy 6 yesterday and it felt good,. but today i can feel looseness in my tendons again,. so i think i will follow you guys advice and wait till next week,.sigh..i hav learned during taper that not running makes me feel crappy even if i cross train.. but thats better then risking injury,...ty for advice guys.

tranquil21   i will be cheering you,. and since i can't run yet , you can throw a couple miles in for meWink. remember why you are running,. it is for your enjoyment, and sense of accomplishment when you challenge yourself and succeed,.so try and enjoy your race even if no one can watch ya,..you earned it!!

labasheeda1014,. as far as steamtown,. i thought it was very well run,.caps out at 2000 runners so its not too crowded or too small,.water and gaterade every mile, with mile markers,.fast course,.(or so i am told), spectator support awesome,.good prerace and post race,.only downfall i noticed was : 45 min bus ride to start,.course is net elevation drop of 985 feet,.but majority is in first 5 miles,.then rolling hills rest of course, so it is easy to blow up quads early if not carefull.. overall i would say do it if you get chance , you should enjoy it,.i will go back and run it again next fall...hopefully to BQ this time.Sealed

guess i will check out some marathons and races online ,.mights well plan out next yers schedule, since no running this week.

Still sick, cant ge over this cold.  Run was supposed to feel easy, but with my cold it just was horrible.  6 mile taper (start real easy end semi-easy)

    mile 1- 7:12
    Mile 2- 6:59
    mile 3- 6:55
    mile 4- 6:49
    mile 5- 6:42
    mile 6- 6:40

I may take the day off tommorow, not sure.  Ridgewood Invitational on saturday, but being sick and all I may not race, depends on how I feel.

pappypage - I will actually be a contrary to the other posters and say that I think you SHOULD be running. Most of the guys I know who ran Chicago this past weekend are running 2-3 miles a day just helping to shake the junk out of their legs. Given these dudes ran pretty quickly, so the wear and tear on their body might be a little less (muscle damage is determined by time spent exercising + intensity, not distance), but I don't know of any principle that would make the physiology of those guys any different than you.

Don't go out and start doing long runs or anything like that, take it easy, really easy, but I think some running would help you recover from whatever soreness you might still be experiencing.

However, as labasheeda1014 said, if your gait is altered then you will probably mess things up more than help them. So I will reiterate, go VERY easy, probably a minute per mile slower than you usually would on an easy run.

Keep in mind I've never ran a marathon, nor have I particularly studied recovery, the stuff I'm offering is anecdotal, and I don't think you will be hurt in the long term if you don't run for this week. But if it is really bothering you not to run and you want to get rid of the soreness a little faster, I think running a couple miles easily will be fine.

Congrats man and sweet pictures, you looked like you were loving every step of the way haha

For what its worth, you guys' stories are actually making me really want to run a full marathon.  I'm looking at a debut in Green Bay this summer or possibly Chicago next fall. It all depends on what happens this spring on the track/roads.

Ex kiwi - love to see your photo - does it look like I am running!!!! To be honest i cant remember it - was in a pretty focussed (read buggered) state by then. http://www.supersportimages.com/ click on melbourne marathon oct 12, adn bib number 615. Just the one so far

For a bit of a laugh have a read of Pg 114 of Friday's herald Sun for those in melbourne - top right corner. mapmyrun's very own gfinkelde gets a mention!!

I did another tune-up workout for my race on Saturday.

4x1000 with the first 600m at tempo pace (~5:20/mi) and the last 400m at goal race pace (~5:00/mi) with 2:00 rest recovery between each 1000m rep. I felt great considering I was wearing a 13 oz shoe and running on a windy day on a track with nothing to block the wind. I went 3:15 (2:00/75), 3:14 (2:00/74), 3:16 (2:00, 76), 3:01 (race effort the whole way).

Then I did some barefoot strides on the grass (yes I do run barefoot even though I discourage people from doing all or most of their running barefoot).

I dunno guys, I've felt really bad the last three weeks or so, but I've got a good feeling about Saturday's 8k.

Enjoyed 5 miles of running on the beach today.  Tuning up for my race Saturday.

Trnquil - Good luck on your 10K Sunday!  Yes, my 5K is Saturday.  I'm just shooting for a sub 20:00.

Pappypage - I agree with KDogg; I think you should be doing some light, easy running.

    Happy Running!!

http://www.supersportimages.com/  - Bib number 1241. Me waving to hubby and kids in the crowd at the end.

KDogg - I reckon you are in line for a bewt run this weekend - good luck!

Pappypage - what fantastic photos of your run - and your time is awesome given the mishap along the way.

Tranquil21 - the MCG is like the australian version of Lord's (england's home of cricket). It holds up to 110k spectators, and is the home of Aussie Rules football - or grand finals are always played there, and also is the home of the traditional "boxing day Test match" for cricket. It has a long long history in Melbourne - and australia. Also Melbournians are a little more fanataical about our sport than most australians - so the MCG is our Mecca! Good luck with your race on the weekend

We are also a bit snobby about good coffee, groovy cafes and restuaurants, and music and arts. LOL

I ran today - and unlike pappy and others, I feel a bit worse for wear. I only did 5kms slow - but my legs are feeling sore and bruised again, like they did straight after marathon (not quite that bad ) no more running for me for a bit longer now I think...
