Hi All, great posts. I am pleased to jump on with an actual run to post this time! With my week off - I had the freshest running legs tonight, did my usual home from the office, and felt great. Do not how long it took me to get home, but felt really good running tonight. ^kms.

Tomorrow morning the return leg - home to office, with PT at lunch time.

Have decided that I really need a new goal urgently to keep me focused - so will be entering the Great Australian Run - 15kms - with Craig Mottram, and Gebreselassie!!! They will be both be completed their run and drinking beer by the time I get to 7kms - but I reckon its my only chance to line up with those legends!

    Happy running all

junkie - how frustrating to do a great time and then find out the course might be suspect. Bugger!  A bloody good time BTW.

So, another couple of newbies.  Excellent; get into it.  And another couple of runners worried about the number of times to run in a week.  Hmmm... There is no right or wrong.  Everybody is different and can cope with or thrive on different milages.  Rod Dixon ( one of the Golden Trio of NZ middle distance runners of the '70s, along with John Walker and Dick Quax ) who went on to win the New York marathon confessed many years later that he won said marathon on "only" around 120km per week when the accepted norm was closer to 160km.  He never told anyone his real milage because he thought no-one would believe him; the point is, he achieved his success on a different basis to everyone else.  So, you must do what is right for you.

What is right for me at the moment is cutting my longer runs short.  I cannot seem to shake the effects of this cold and hope like hell it's gone by next weekend for Auckland.  Instead of doing 8 * 800m repeats  I did 4 and whimpered home afterwards.

Fungusfoot and MarkRTC - thanks for the shout out.  Keep in mind that I'm in Florida, where it's been extremely hot and humid.  Cooler weather is a Godsend.

I ran 10 miles this morning!  Wonderful!! 55 degrees in North Florida.  Still a bit humid, but I'll take it.

    Happy Running to all!

Great reading about all you pros!!  Inspirational.  If you don't mind I would love some newby advice.   History.  Wife and I decided in February to change our lifestyle and get back in shape.  Started walking 3.1 miles everyday and changed our diet.  I am 52 yrs and dropped 40 lbs by June.  We started adding cycling to our mix. By Sept. I wanted to see if I could run again!!  Well I can!  I am now running 3.1 miles every other day in about 28 minutes.  I want to enter a 5k in the next few weeks and want to be up to a 10 k by the spring.  My question is,  should I try to run the 3.1 faster or keep extending my weekly mileage. I NEVER thought that this would actually be fun!!!!

    Thanks all

     JAllyn

Hi Baseroom! From everything I've read you should do a little of both, but not at the same time. Once day try to run a little faster. Another day try to run a little further. When I try it, I find it easier to add miles (okay, footage) rather than speed, but I'm working on it. Mostly you're trying to challenge your muscles in both ways and letting them adapt. Good luck!

Baseroom, I agree with fungus. check out www.halhigdon.com for training plans for 5k and 10k. I think most of his beginner plans are mainly about building up endurance...increased endurance will bring an increase in speed. I was able to knock around 5 minutes off my 5k by just building endurance.

ex-k1w1, It was a little frustrating, but I'm still happy with that run time.

Junkie and fungus (I like writing that),

Thanks!  I checked out the website.  I think I will contiue to build mileage to 5 miles every other day.  I walk and bike on the off days.  Once I get to 5 miles I will try that Intermediate plan on the halhigdon website.  Up here in snowland I just hope I can continue with bare roads for most of the winter.

Easy 4 miles today.  I thought my legs were tight, but after I got them moving, I felt fine.  Its kinda cool, because i am kinda bummed out today about a serious of events from yesterday.....and all i could think was..."i need to go for a run"   its nice that we can use running that way.  And when I stepped outside...it was drizzling.  Iwas actually wishing for rain, but...the sun broke through instead....gr symbolism...lol

I made a mistake and the 5k is actually next weekend..and i wont be able to make it...so now there is nothing between now and the 15k i aim for on 11/30.  And..i get to go to California on nov. 13, and all i could think about it.."yes!  running along the beach!"  lol

I think tommorrow I will head to the track and run some intervals there....sprint the straight aways, jog the turns...for 2 miles,1 mile warm up, 1 mile cool down...something like that....Then friday..attempt an 8 mile long run....woohoo!

Welcome to any other newbies i see here...

Steve921 - nice workout. What do you usually race? You should try making those 200s into 400s; its my golden workout, i usually end up cutting the recovery between the 4s to 100m because i just want to get on to the next repeat! 20 of those suckers is a real mental workout too!.................................Nice tempo-tune up run at lunch: 20 easy, 35 tempo (slightly sub 7 pace), 20 easy, for about 10 miles. Easy trail run this evening.

steve is gonna have a pretty sick track season with those kind of workouts. But yea, for cross I would probably gear you more towards 10-15x400. I understand you probably don't have much say in it though. You are definitely going sub 5:00 in the mile man.

I did a nice little tune-up workout today so I can be fresh for Saturday. 7x1000 with ~2:00 rest. (probably too much rest, but hey). I ran the first three with one of my buddies in the runners club, then I dropped to goal 5k race effort for the last four.

    3:13, 3:12, 3:11, 3:00, 3:03, 3:04, 3:03

The first three were just chillin, the last four were tough but definitely sustainable. To make things better, I ran them in heavy trainers rather than flats, so the effort would be a little less in racing flats. I really wanted to roll out and go sub 3:00 on one of them, but I figured it'd be a bad idea and I would probably pull a hammy or something since it was so cold out.

I actually do 400m workouts every once and a while (8-12x400m) and sometimes (6-8x800m), 5-8X1000m or 4X1600m.  Well freshman year during winter/spring track I ran mostly the 800m and 1600m then towards the end of spring track i started to do the 3200m instead of the 800m, ended up being way better in the 2 mile. (2:23 800m vs 11:25 2 mile and 5:20 1600m) This year im probably only doing the mile and two mile, i think the 800m is to fast for me, but ill probably do it once or twice in an easy dual meet just to see where i stand.

Kdogg-I hope man lol.  Aiming for 4:55.

Went out at lunch today and ran 13kms, 1km easy, then 10kms at race pace (56 mins), and 2kms to warm down. It was a beautiful sunny day around the waterfront, and felt great to be out there. Junkie - looking forward to hearing how you go on Saturday. Is it your first one, and are you aiming for a specific time, or to complete? Best of luck whatever your mission is!

Off again for about 3 days.  Did about 7 miles on Sat and a 2.5 mile walk on Sunday.  But the hip has been bothering me again (hurt bad on the Sat. run) so I'm cutting back.  Got a nice sports massage at Spa Nordstrom in Seattle yesterday and that helped some.  Today I made an appointment with the doc for tomorrow so I''ll get the hip checked out then.  I'm fairly certain that I get referral to a PT.  I'm also going to ask for hip X-rays since I want to be absolutely sure that I'm dealing with a muscle pull and not joint issues.  Also a good X-ray will establish some baseline data for future use.

If I keep having to lay off the hip, the 1:45 half marathon goal for Nov 30th is slipping away.  At this point, I just want to be sure I can continue to run over the long term.

Track workout for me tonight, 400-800-1200-1600-1200-800-400 can't remember all my splits (don't yet have a watch that records multiple splits!). Was roughly 1:30, 3:20, 6:20, 8:30, 6:30, 3:40: 1:40 - something like that anyway! Was quite happy with it.

Gearing up for gearing down over the winter... looking forward to clocking the miles and working on speed and endurance without the pressure of races. Maybe one more before xmas. Just started working part time in a running store so really looking forward to kitting up now : )

Gilly et al... I understand that more experienced runners often do 5+ runs per week, however teecue (? apologies if spelt wrong) mentioned they started in March so I would recommend that they maybe take it a little easier. I still stand by that and while I appreciate that the odd 'exceptional' or 'seasoned' runner might be able to run everyday but I don't think that the average or normal human body can take that level of physical exertion without more recovery time (at least one day a week).

Great workout lex! I kinda like doing ladders myself, although im with labasheeda on the 400's, its my favorite workout by far. I usually only do 10 but my race is usually closer to a mile. I stay away from the marathon, not for me.

6x1mile this morning. It was pretty chilly, 51, but the wind was 30mph! We do them on a 1mile jogging trail thats pretty much a square-ish shape, and somehow the wind was against us on 3 out of the 4 sides! We stayed really consistent despite the wind, staying between 5:02 & 5:05. Not fast but good for the day.

lexb     Thanks for your input.  As a newby and enjoying this I feel like I want to run everyday.  But at 52 I want to be wise about making this a long term thing...not a burst then get injured.  I run every other day and  walk and cycle on the off days.  I want to build from 3.1 miles to 5 miles.  Then I will look at a program.  My respect to all you veterans who work so hard!!!

Just ran what I'm guessing will be my last run before Monday's marathon. Done a 12 miler in 1:29:48 (7:29 pace).

Needed to break in my lovely new Asics GT2120's - needless to say they're now boggin' with dirt - darn farm roads.

I have to go all the way down to Dublin on Saturday (4hrs bus each way) to pick up my race pack...and then the same on race day. I 'may' go for a short run on Friday.

Great to hear how things are coming along with everyone's running. Tranquil21, well done on your 10k. Junkie_99, all the best for your marathon on Saturday

7 Mile Tempo Run this morning.  Loved it.  Perfect weather!!

Pappypage - Believe me, winters and springs in Florida are great!  You can race just about anywhere in the state.  I'm in Jacksonville and it's perfect for running this time of year. It's is summer and most of the Fall that can be miserable, with the stiffling humidity.  Once winter comes, we have some of the best weather in the country.  Let me know what you decide.  We have some great winter/spring marathons.

    Happy Running!

Steve921 - i started with the 1600 my junior year in highschool (5:17), had better success at the 3200 (11:17), ran cross my senior year (5k - 17:57) then crashed and burned in college - too many all-niters and such a shitty schedule that i was always late to practice and could never travel to meets. sooooo i started doing things on my schedule and now marathon (3:05) with some little races thrown in (10k - 38:08)....... Did you ever read "Once A Runner"???? (hence the masochistic 400s.) I feel the same way about the 800, requires just a little more speed than i can muster! Freakin tough race though!..........KDogg and LexB - also tough workouts! nice job!..........40mins easy on the trail last night......90min progression run at lunch (8:00 to sub 7:00 pace) then 45mins easy after work.

first long run since the 1/2 - did a long slow 10.3 miles today - very slow at almost a 10 min/mile pace. My legs felt really heavy and tired after last nights track workout, all sorts of creaks and aches but just kept on pushing through it. Had a gu (espresso - yum!) at about 4.5miles (just before a climb) and then had to have my emergency back up gu (chocolate mint - even better!!!) at mile 8.5 when my stomach started grumbling!!! Not a great run but glad I have it under my belt now.

I'm also suffering from disappointment with my shoes - I bought NB 1062's a month or so ago, they felt amazing in the shop but as I soon as I got them home they just didn't quite feel the same. I have only really used them for my long runs and races but I just don't love them as much as I thought i would. My feet feel quite sore today... back to the saucony's I guess.

Hey all....so yeah....i headed to the track today.  I go to a University..im SURE there has to be a better track than the one i ran on today...I just gotta find it.

I did a one mile warmup...then 2 miles on the track sprinting the straights, jogging the curves...then a one mile cooldown.  I learned two very important things today:

     1)  your training sneaks are not quite as faithful to you once you pickup on speed on a track.

    2)   gravel tracks suck for speed....

    oh and oh yeah...

    3)  I'm not 15 anymore...:/

Pappypage...SO exciting to hear you are going to be running another marathon so soon!!  im so excited about that!  I'll continue to keep watching your posts...

Fricster....Thanks...same to you.....btw..i need a running picture!  lol....most everyone else has one here!

Junkie99 and GraemeC.....good luck on your marathons!!!   we'll be cheering you on over here!

baseroom.....yeah...i am getting pretty  into it...and i havent even been running for two full months yet!!   but...Iguess...the running "grounds" me...so to speak...

Fungus....I agree completely with LexB....i love the days off as much as i love the days i run...and not because i get to be lazy....but because i actually *miss* running  on the off days.  So the run days are SO much more beneficial!  Ive even had some days where I had to think.."hey...did i run today?"  its great...

    G'day all!

This is my first post on this forum. What a great motivating tool. I currently live in Louisiana, where the weather is as unpredictable as (insert analogy here).

I am 26 years old and am trying to find the old self-disciline that I u8sed to have. I lived in Kansas City (AMAZING CITY FOR RUNNERS) for 2 years during graduate school and had a running partner who pushed me and motivated me to run.

I ran 5 or 6 5K-10K races and then jumped in the Lawrence, KA 1/2 Marathon, finishing in 1:44:40---the first 24-year-old male to finish. I was pumped.

Nevertheless, I moved back to Louisiana, where food can take a runner and turn him into a running-tub-of-lard, and gained about 25 pounds, going from 185 up to 210. I got married and am expecting a baby girl...which is a great inspiration to get back at this...but it's so hard to find the time to get a run in everyday. I am a teacher, and I feel like I need an extra 5-10 hours in the day.

I just recently got a membership at the healthclub in the city where I teach, and I've been hitting the pool to try and shed some lbs. Endurance-wise, I'm ok. I can put in a 3-4 mile run, no problem. The problem is with my knees...I guess God never meant to have a 210 pound guy run long distances.

Anyway...I'll post my daily updates on here as well, hoping that you guys could provide some support and much-needed advice. I really look forward to getting my old body back and getting my first marathon under my belt.

Thanks for takinf the time to read my post.

     Happy running!

All the best Graeme for the mara on Monday.  Bet you will feel like a Guiness (or will it be a Kilkenny?) after that.

I went out early this morning for a 6k easy run.  Ran it in a slow 37, but couldn't have run faster if my ass was on fire - hadn't quite recovered from what was quite a demanding 13k yesterday.  Also, have just realised that I've run for 7 of the last 8 days ... need a rest bad.  Now in taper mode tho, so will ease up.

Hey, I've got one stupid question, and figure I might as well ask it here.  For the upcoming race what is more important, my 'gun' time (ie from the time the gun goes off at the start to the time I cross the finish) or net time (time I cross the start line to the time I finish)?  With 7500 runners competing it took me over 4 minutes just to get to the start line last year.  Any thoughts?

    KDogg

hey Mark, your net time is more important for PR purposes. However, at many (most - if not all) races will use gun time to determine the overall winner and probably the age group placings.

For example, a guy I used to race against (well run in the same race with, I hardly raced him lol) was denied the elite start at the Chicago marathon this past race since this was his marathon debut. He ended up running a ~2:14 or so which was good for 4th place overall with NET time. However, the rules of the race specify that it is the first X number that cross the line that will win the money. So this guy had the 4th fastest time in the race, but the 9th fastest gun time (elites start 5:00 ahead of the masses), so he missed out on a lot of money.

tranquil - I so agree with the part about your shoes just aren't the same when you want to try and go fast. I ran a workout in my trainers the other day (mistake #1) and didn't wear socks (mistake #2) and my feet got owned to say the least.

labasheeda1014- Wow your high school track times were insane. 17:57 5k is ridiculous!  Your marathon P.R is also crazy.

Anyways, 6 miles today in 38:53. Basically hit 6:30's for the first mile and then picked it up the last mile and hit a 6:10 or something close to that.

Kipfaulk - Welcome man!!!  Glad to have you!  This is  an exciting forum.  Here you will find all the help you need.  I know about that food down in Louisiana...it will take discipline to trim down; but running will help a lot.

LexB - You went out and ran a long run after doing a tough track workout the night before???  You???  The one scolding me for not taking days off????  Of course your legs felt heavy and tired.  That's too funny.  I told you...I always follow an intense workout with a very light one.  BTW, I have always believed that with a proper diet, one shouldn't need supplements like Gu, even for your long runs.  I try to get enough carbs in my diet and never take Gu for my training runs.  That may not be the best thing, but that's what I do.

Tranquil - your posts are always so entertaining.  It sounds like you are talking to us.  It's so funny.  You are such.....a girl.  Too funny.  I personally don't like days off.  I only take them because I have to.  When I run, I have a pep in my step all day that isn't there on days off.  Running will certainly remind you that you are not 15, won't it?

Mark - The Net Time (or Chip Time) is the only one I ever pay attention to.

Graemec - Have a great race, Monday!!

    Happy Running!

Gilly - I was at no time scolding you in that post, simply reiterating / defending my original response to a post from teecue (sp.?). I made no reference at any point to you personally or your training regime other than "while some people 'exceptional' people can run everyday, most of us do require rest and recovery days". You are obviously one of those exceptional runners.

And yes, dumb idea to do a long run after yesterday, for sure - guilty as charged, unfortunately however this is the only the day I have free for a long run, so I had to take it. Last nights track workout was with my running group so I didn't have any say in that. Just one of those things. As for Gu's, I have an extremely healthy diet but I do need gels on long runs as I have a sensitive stomach. Aside from carb loading I find it hard to eat before an early long run, so I do need gels to help get me through it.

    Cheers

Lex - I was simply poking fun.  I agree with your premise.

Baseroom - congrats on such precipitous weight loss.  My Lord!

No running since Sat.  Went for a massage on Mon and that helped a bit.  Saw my doc today and got a PT referral.  Also got a prescription for 6 massages - SCORE!  The net diagnosis - a pulled gluteus medius.  Almost certainly not a joint problem -which is what was worrying me (the guy in the office next to me is a few years older and needs hip replacement - I can't see me walking with a cane in a couple of years).  So, I'll get signed up for some PT, stay off the running for one more week or so, get some more massages and see if I can get things together again for my assualt on my first half at the end of Nov.

Hey Roger.....great news!  glad to hear its not a joint issue and that you are on top of it.  I fear injury so much because I know how stubborn I can be about stopping.

Gilly...I am such a girl...I know.  And I am talking to you guys.  My friends can't appreciate this excitement.  My best friend is all about doing things like crochet and jewlery making and sewing, and my other best friend is super into soccer....but...no runners.  And besides...I type how I am...so, if I every meet anyone personally...it won't be a surprise!

    fricster...HAHA

baseroom....that is awesome....this is why people who say "i can't" make me nuts....CLEARLY you can..!

Steve...I so wish I was as dedicated as you in highschool...keep up the good work!

Side topic....has anyone seen the High Fructose Corn Syrup commercials...?  What IS that??  the fact that they are advocating something so unhealthy amazes me and always gets me peeved!  Just had to share...

    Good nyte!

kipfaulk - God did indeed mean for 210 lb people to run.  I ran for a couple of years at that weight and when I ran the Gold Coast marathon back in '98, I actually got a top 10 placing in the "Clydesdale" division - over 90kg!  These days I tend to hover around 86kg (190 lb) and I'm sure my knees are thankful for the "lighter" load.

to all who care to know - I also run 6 days a week.  I'm not exactly what you would call an exceptional athlete, but once you've been training reasonably consistently for a couple of years or more, there should be no reason why you too could not run every day.  I do cherish that one day a week I have off though.

junkie and graemec - best of luck this weekend.  GraemeC - you must love the bus!

Still ticking over with an easy 8km each day for the last 2 days. Consistently under 5:00 per km on my easy days now so pretty happy.

Easy 5.5 mile run last night, just to let my legs know that they don't have the whole week off leading up to the marathon on Sunday.  I will probably do another 3 mile run on Friday, and the let my legs rest for race day.  Temps will be in the low 60's, so I'm pleased that the weather is cooperating.

Lately I've been really excited to check this forum every day and see what kind of running everyone is up to.  Even though we're all doing the same basic activity, its cool that everyone is doing different distances, paces, workouts, etc.  The common theme is that we're all deciding to get out there, which reminds me of my all-time favorite running slogan (Adidas ad) - "Everyone is invited, but not everyone shows up."   Cheers to all of us for showing up.

To my fellow upcoming marathoners GraemeC and Junkie - good luck to you both over the next few days.  Let's go out and kick some marathon butt so we can report back on great races.

Junkie - All the best to you, Saturday, dude.  We'll be thinking about you.  I'll be running a 16-mile long, easy run at home while you are racing.

Ex-K1W1 - You're the man!  You ran a marathon at 210lbs?  Wow!!  I'm sitting at 160 and I thought I was too heavy for the 26.2 mile haul.  Like you, I'm far from an "exceptional" athlete, and I also treasure my Sundays off.  On Saturday when I'm doing my long run, it fuels me knowing I have that day off to look forward to, also I met my goal for the week (this week, I'm doing 70 miles).

Fricster - Yes, calories can "count twice," depending on how food is prepared.  And they have exotic rules of food preparation in LA.

Baseroom - Is it tough keeping the weight off?

Lex - I know how you feel regarding your shoes.  I've had that happen to me...get home and they fit differently, etc.  But I always took them right back to the store and replaced them.  The biggest problem I'm having with shoes is as soon as I fall in love with a pair, they "upgrade" the shoe and mess it up, then I can never get the original shoe again.  I loved the Brooks Glycerin 5.  The Glycerin 6 came out with more cushion, hence more weight, and I don't like it nearly as much.  Thankfully, I have a few hundred more miles on my G5's.

Tranquil - We told you early on to watch out...running is addicting.  You've discovered it for yourself.  Thanks for the fresh perspective you bring to this forum.

    Happy Running to all!

Easy 1 hour run today, at around 6:50-7:10 pace, we needed to take it easy today.  Then tomorrow an easy 3-4 miles then county meet on saturday morning.

Great training today. Swam 1000 meters (laps) taking 30 seconds between every 200 meters. It has been nice adding swimming to my training routine. Everyone tells me that swimming will help me tone up, shed fat, and build lean muscle. I'm all for that.

Also put in a nice 2-mile run around 5:00pm. Still having a little knee tenderness, but overall a good run. I'm starting to have that "good soreness" that comes after you've really worked hard...so that's a little motivation there!

Thanks for all the replies and the future support.

Bummed this morning. I've been really getting after it this week, and the scale says I've gone from 210lbs. to 211.3 lbs. How depressing. Running and swimming everyday...eating correctly...weight gain. Anyone have any insight on why this might be?
