I train regularly (about 20 workouts/month) for sprint to olympic distance triathlons and recently had to take 3 weeks off of impact (running/cycling) activities for a calf muscle tear. During those 3 weeks, I only did a few swim workouts. I generally spent time on the couch, not exercising, not really watching my diet.

To my surprise, I weighed myself after the 3 weeks expecting to see weight gain. However, I lost 5 lbs. !?

Does anyone else experience this? It seems for me historically that weight loss occurs when I am least active and seem to eat the most?!

I'd love to hear any comments...

I'm no expert but i might guess that you are losing muscle mass but havent been out long enough to start putting on fat. Maybe its just the time of day that you weighed, perhaps you were dehydrated, or a combination of these.

    Again thats just a guess...

Do your clothes fit the same?  I would imagine that if you are losing muscle that they would or be a bit tighter--may be a good way to gage.  Muscle is much more dense than fat so you can weigh more but have a leaner physique.   Also, you may want to use body fat % rather than the scale as a measurement during your down time since the scale doesn't give you accurate body composition.  Your local gym should  be able to help you with this.  Hope your calf is better and you are back in tris soon.

Yeah, I agree with the above posters. When I was in middle school and first started running cross-country, I gained almost 50 pounds after one semester, but still looked as thin as I did before I started! Muscle weighs a LOT.
