    Hi all,

I'll be in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks and have never ran there.  Is it relatively safe? I know it's not pedestrian friendly but some of you might have some feedback for me?  I'll be staying at the Rio.  Any routes for me?  Help apprecieted

Vegas is not a runner friendly city.  Just came back.  Too many cars, people and pollution.  I did go to Red Rock Canyon about 15 miles from Vegas.  Very nice park with good trails.  Advice to all, during your next trip there, if you can, try red Rock.

I was just in Vegas in February and I find the Strip is very runner friendly in the morning.  From dawn til about 8 - 9am, the sidewalks a pretty empty.   I imagine everyone is still sleeping off the effects of a night filled with activities they can't take home with them. Wink

I got out on the strip from 6 - 7am and the only other people out there were other joggers.  It made for some very impromptu jogging partners.

Running on Las Vegas Blvd. is the safest. I would run no later than 9am. From the Rio, run down to the Blvd. and down towards NY, NY. Also, check with hotel. Sometimes they post running routes from the hotel. I know the Westin has a couple to running routes posted on their site.

I was there last week. If you run on the Las Vegas Blvd between 6am to 7am, you'll be fine. I ran from the Ventian all the way to NY, NY. There's a lot  of up and down steps.

Does anyone know of a group/community here on MapMyRun where people who travel a lot have discussions?  I travel often and one of my favorite things to do is skip out on the dinners of french fries and hamburgers with co-workers, get out and get lost in a new city.

    To jmk,

It would be usefull.  Even if you map out your run, it would be nice to have more info like: areas of the city to avoid, sport shops, paths & parks where one can run...

We will be in Vegas in September and I plan on using the strip for my morning runs.  I figured that would be the safest place for me to run and I have heard that it is a great place for a morning run.

That is what I have heard.  We are staying at the Imperial so I will probably run from there to the farthest end and back.  I am going to map out a couple of runs, print them out and take them with me.  The trip is going to be allot of fun (except for my first ever plane ride) and I am looking forward to new running scenery!

I live in Vegas and find the running community here phenomenal. Fleet Feet Sports offers group runs during the week and can put you in touch with other runners. I am training with the Las Vegas Roadrunners for the 2008 Marathon here in Dec. We run in different locations throughout the city on Saturday mornings. Call Fleet Feet for times and locations. The strip is personally one course I will avoid at all costs. You can not run on the asphalt and must by law climb the escalators at all intersections.  Never run Koval or Paradise Ave. It is a well known drug area at all times of the day. The soccer parks , golf courses and any route in Summerlin is quite safe for a male runner. Women should run with a friend if possible. I run a park near the Fleet Feet in Summerlin at 4:00 am because the US Marshals patrol the park and the  security knows me by name and face. Also the fire station  is close and they run there as well. For tourists, shuttle buses run between casinos and will take you to some incredible hills and scenery in Summerlin for a small fee. Try the JW Marriott  on Fort Apache/Rampart for a challenging hill route up into Summerlin. Coffee, water and a power bar at City Stop fuels you for the down hill back to the casino. Enjoy Vegas, it is really a beautiful, scenic city away from the hype of the strip.

darmess - I appreciate you posting about running in Vegas.  I would have responded sooner but I just saw your post today.  So there are escalators at intersections?  I will probably be running Thursday and Saturday morning, early as long as I don't get to bed to late.  I am a bit leery of running the strip after reading your post.  Unfortunately I am the only one that runs so I will be headed out by myself.  I don't plan on running more then a few miles and may hit the gym in the hotel (we are at the Imperial) if I can't find a suitable place outside but truly, I really want the experience of running in somewhere other then my usual spots.  Is there anywhere near the strip that I can go that would be safe?  Is the park near Fleet Feet anywhere near the strip?  I am going to do some reading on Summerlin and try to make a plan for myself.

You could take a cab to the park by Fleet Feet, it would be worth it  to me.  About $35.00 without traffic. The other possibilty is to take a  shuttle to Suncoast, Red Rock or Rampart Casino and head out from there.  These are in Summerlin and the areas  are pretty safe. I usually head out about 4:30 am and it is light within the first half hour of my run.  Red Rock Casino would be my last choice of 3 above, it is right off the freeway and is on a large street. Rampart and Suncoast you can run thru residential area's.
