I hope that someone can help me out with this. I had a horrible stress fracture of my upper tibia in Nov 07. Walked with crutches/walking boot/cane for about 12 weeks, then another4-6 weeks or so to get rid of the limp while walking.

I am able to do very small amounts of running only 1-2 times per week, 2-3 miles each time. I still have some bony pain in the area of the fracture, and I stop when I start to feel that pain.

However, I am have pretty intense hip pain now, on the same side as the stress fracture. This pain is there all the time, but is usually pretty mild with normal activity. After running, however, it is much worse. It doesn't feel like it is in the joing itself, but more like a soft tissue achiness. When I do a standing ITB stretch (legs crossed, lean away from the affected side), I will feel the pain the most. Is this an ITB problem (no pain in my knees) - or maybe bursitis? I figure that it has something to do with the long period of limping on that side after my stress fracture. Any thoughts?

I think that it could be the old ITB. That stretch is the right one to do but you may need a readjustment. My wife had a similar hip pain last summer. (Without the previous tibia fracture.) She finally went to a sports Chiropractor. After getting an X-Ray of her hip and pelvis it was found that one leg was longer than the other. (Due to the ITB) She got a few adjustments, started using an orthotic in the shoe on the affectted side, and did the ITB stretch. Now she's back to running 7 miles. (Her personal best)

I know how frustrating it can be to pace youself when recovering from an injury but take your time and be patient. It will come!
