I'm training for a 1/2 and a Marathon in Sept and November in Philly, and I'm training in Princeton. I've found a few good routes, but I'm always looking for more, and more importantly, A RUNNING PARTNER! Please let me know if you are interested.
Alycia,
I lived for three years down by Market Fair mall. The running in Princeton was awesome. With the Canal Path, you will have plenty of out and back options.
One suggestion, don't run more than 7 miles south on the path alone.
The one problem with the canal is that the only "hills" will be Alexander Road and the bridge going across 77. The second half of the Philly Marathon had a few good hills on it. Therefore one of my long loops starts on the canal, goes to Kingsport, up to the Princeton Airport and back along the Great Road.
I have a few of my loops on my public profile so you can search them. Again, I lived down in the Seminary's married housing, so most of my runs began by the mall.
Enjoy that canal because there is nothing like a morning run trying to race the crew team.
I am also preparing for Philadelphia Half marathon. There is another nice running route starting from CVS pharmacy through Mt Lucas, turning left on Ewing and then following Bunn Rd. I have saved those routes on my profile. Looking for a running troup or partner around princeton area, but must warn, i am fairly slow. Are you aware of any particualr route that resembles the phidelphia half marathon route close?
I haven't researched the Philly 1/2 marathon enough to know of any routes that are similar around here, but from what I've heard about it, is that the course is relatively flat, with rolling hills. I did the Broad Street Run ( 10 miles) and i didnt notice any hills. So the path along the canal is always nice for a flat run. I'm also pretty slow, but I'm going to start with the Mercer County Running Club on the weekends ( I think they meeting Sunday mornings) or with the Princeton Running Company ( sat mornings). ALSO, I helped start a new running group at CanDo fitness. We are starting this Thursday at 6pm, and we will run along the canal. The group is open to runners of all paces, and you don't have to be a CanDo member to run. You should definitely come out to that. Since it's a start-up, you can help start a group that runs at your pace, rather than find an established group or change your pace.
I'm also on the Runnersworld.com Discussion boards, and I dont visit here much, so feel free to contact me ( they have personal messaging on that board) if you want more info about the running clubs. I'm also AlyciaMarie on that board. Or just show up on Thursday at CanDo fitness in Princeton.
The first half of the full philly (Which is the Half's course), back in 06 (not sure if they have changed it) is relatively flat. You run mostly through old town area then cross over to UPenn. There are a few hills right at the end.
A few runs up from the Canal trail should do well. Also coming up Mercer through the Battlefield would be comparable.
I have started running on the canal towpath. In fact did a 9 mile run today enduring the heavy rain. The run was fun, but now have developed some bad blister probably from running in wet socks. Quite a bummer. I use the assics nylon running socks and my new (1 day old) brooks running shoes. Any suggestion on how to treat blister?
There is a 5K road race at ETS campus on this tuesday. I am debating whether to run at that with this blister.
How's your run coming along at a canal tow path AlyciaMarie?
