I've been doing quite a lot of trail running (3/4 times a week). Each run will range from 8-12km and with total elevation on each run between 150-400m. I'm training for the 5 peaks series and also for the Vancouver half marathon on 22 June.

I've found that although I feel fine doing the runs, my legs (and me to an extent) feel permanently tired. So I've a couple of questions:

    1. I'm not taking a protein / recovery drink. I have half a cliff bar before my run and the other half after. Is this okay or do you suggest a drink and if so which one?

    2. Am I doing too much trail running in a week? Should I do less and more road running to take the strain off my legs?

    Thanks

I don't think that 3/4 trail runs a week is too much.  Trails are great for running as the impact is better than being on the streets.  Stay hydrated on your runs, it doesn't matter if it is with water or an electrolyte drink.

I would evaluate your diet in general, not just pre/post run.  It is important to maintain a good level of protein/healthy fats/good carbs to keep your system in check.  With trail runs it is also important to make sure you are taking in enough calories.

My other suggestion would be to make sure you are getting enough sleep.  I know that now that it is warmer out I have increased my workouts and for the first couple of weeks I was having the same problem.  By increasing my caloric (in a good way) intake I have gradually adjusted to the new demands on my body.

Hope this helps...and good luck in the races!
