I just started biking a few weeks with my three year old in tow. I was riding a 12 year old mountain bike and just recently bought a 2007 Schwinn Sierra.  Is there anything I can do to make the rides a little easier? The wind has been the biggest obstical with the two seater trailer. Is there a gear that would make the bike more mobile against a wall of wind?

Keep your legs spinning by choosing low gears - the speed will come with strength and endurance.

I have ridden with two types of trailers and I have found that the type/design of the trailer makes all the difference in the world.  At first I had one of those InStep (I think) that had a plastic bottom and all the stroller attachments.  I don't know what it weighed but it wore me out!  This spring I bought a Burley Bee 2 seater with 20" wheels and no stroller attachments.  It is a beautiful thing!  I think the trailer weighs around 17 lbs or so.  I have pulled it on 20 mile rides and only sacrificed a few mph.  Also, don't give up in the first few weeks.  When I first started pulling a trailer (even the Bee this year) I thought I was going to die from exertion but with a little persistence, I was able to overcome the wall and now my 3 yr old and I go out all the time.  I figure it is good training for when I don't have a kid in tow!  Good luck to you!

Thanks!!! Sounds silly but I always thought the higher gears were the ones to be in, never gave much thought to the lower ones. After I fix my flat I will definitely start using the low gears!!

The lower gears definitely help. I usually ride in amid-gear when I pull my 4 year old around. He loves it and the extra resistance helps build strength. When I unhook the trailer, and ride alone, I fly! Good luck & have fun!

I use a mid gear when pulling my daughter, there is a great ride just round from me, Loch ore Meadows , been going round that with daughter and adding some weight to help training,

As it is a varied ride (tarmac and flat 1 half and gravel and hilly(ish) round the 2nd part) i find going round 3 times at speed is now a walk in the park (about 5/6 miles each round)

Haven't done much road cycling with it as yet but my leg endurance on solo rides has increased quite some
