In addition to my normal runs, I've been incorporating CrossFit workouts twice a week. It's a great break from the grind of just pounding the pavement, and I'm noticing improvements in my general fitness level already.
My question...is anyone out there using MapMyRun to record their CrossFitting? There's not a real precise category, so I've just been using gym workout "Total Body" as the default, and then specifying in my notes what we did. If anyone has a better way, I'm certainly open to it.
If you're not familiar with CrossFit, checkout the website, www.crossfit.com. It's a lot a fun, and so far, has been the hardest workouts consistently that I've done in a long time. It's my present to myself now that I'm forty.
I have been doing CF for about 6 months now. I love the variation and how hard it pushes me. I got into it to be in shape of the military. I honestly was extremely weak in my upper body and love all of the pushups, pullups, and core work. I try to do it five days a week but don't always follow the rest days on the site. I have to do most of the workouts at a lower weight or with assistance but I have seen massive improvement in my overall strength and have increased my CF Total score by about 65%.
All that being said I am not a hardcore runner; specializing in 5-15K distances, so CF doesn't interfere too much. I generally run in the mornings and do CF over my lunchbreak. I use MapMyRun to chart everything but as you said I just put the workout in as "Strength Training" and put all the details in the notes.
elmosferrari, congrats on the level 1 cert. I was looking at that but it seemed pretty tough. Didn't know if it would be worth it to try and get certified. How has it been for you?
ndk - thanks. it has been pretty good for me, I had been doing CF for a while before i actually got certed and at my current gym, people come to me specifically since they know i do CF. I am awaiting my time to start my own affiliate gym. if you have any plans to open up a gym, it would be a great idea. Actually, since you are in the military, you might get a discount, or possibly even free. There were a few marines at my certification who were allowed in for free
I've been tinkering with CF for a while and I've just recently gotten the resolve to do it all right - diet, crossfit, the other stuff I do b/c I love it. It's very similar to the types of training I've done in the past, i.e., minimalist, high intensity, functional movements, etc. I'm just thankful the workouts are fairly short because it makes all my weaknesses shine brightly.
I'm a lifelong cyclist and kind of an all-around athlete type, but I've found CF doesn't care. I have to scale back quite a bit of the moves and some of them just kill me. I've eased into trail running in the last few years, as well - I want to find weaknesses and kill 'em. XFit is good for that.
