    Hi all --

I find when I run that after the first couple miles, I have a big buildup of saliva that requires me to spit pretty frequently...I'm wondering if this is a sign of being under-hydrated, over-hydrated, etc.?  Or maybe it's just something that happens, and no big deal...thanks!

I have no idea if its under or over hydration, but I spit like crazy when I run... I just hope no one I see on my run thinks I'm disrespecting them! I've heard a lot of runners spit a lot. I feel so darned feminine hacking up every 10th of a mile or so... then again someone told me mud and spit made me hardcore so it's not so bad. Wink

I think it has to do with the deep breathing involved in running, I don't think it's so much saliva as it is the junk from inside the  lungs, mucus, etc. getting hacked up.

For my last two runs I didn't take my inhaler before hand, and noticed I hacked up a lot more than with it.

I'm curious to know if any one has ever figured this one out too!

Do you breathe in/out through your nose or mouth, or both? Try experimenting with different methods.

I seem to get thick saliva when ive drank thicker liquids like orange juice or isotonic drink, if i stick to water it doesn't seem as bad

I DEFINITELY feel my mouth watering pretty much instantly when I start running. Consequently, I tend to spit a lot, too. I've always done it though, even during track in high school when my event was the 400, my mouth was watering constantly and I had to spit as soon as the race was over. Just be glad that your nose doesn't run... It's always embarrassing as a girl to have to blow your nose onto the pavement in order to keep breathing... yuck...!

I don't think it's a problem... just a fact of life for a lucky few of us! ;)

I have this as well - thought it was just me as my friends don't seem to have to spit as much as me!  When I'm running with a friend I have to run slightly behind her .... just to make sure.

I have a lot of problems with saliva build up in my throat.  I started using a breath rite strip on my nose and it has helped some.  I still get a lot of build up in my throat and have to spit but it's not as bad in my nose.  I find that when I drink during a run, it helps - momentarily.
