Hope that's not too personal to scare people off from offering their input. . . I've been increasing my workout intensity with the inspiration of this site; getting rid of the junk miles and running at a stronger pace. All other running has been the same, including mileage and a 18 to 20 km long run every Sunday.

Just ran a half marathon on the weekend and I've never felt so awful in the last third. And that absolutely drained feeling continued for the next 24 - 36 hours. I haven't found a marathon that difficult in the past. My time was fine -- similar to my half marathon history -- though I think at the halfway point I was on track for a much faster time.

Is this bonking? If so, how do I get re-energized -- I'm a bit discouraged as I felt my training quality had been excellent. Thanks for any input you experienced runners might have for me. Happy running! Erin

"I'm no authority but..." Certainly sounds as though you may have. My "bonking" experiences have been very similar to that- feeling like absolute crud (legs full of sand, slightly queezy) during a workout, then exhausted for a day or so afterward.

I'm afraid my only advice is this- don't get overwhelmed by a single race or run result- Unless you're competing professionally, ultimately they're only runs. You'll have another, better one tomorrow or next week. Give yourself a break. Eat well. Take the next couple of runs a little easier.

    Erin,

You haven't been overtraining, have you?

Not sure what you mean by junk miles but if you mean slow runs, these obviously serve a purpose for recovery and general conditioning.

You may have been building up a llevel of fatigue in the lead up to the race and if you are very determined and strong willed, you may have pushed yourself through this instead of easing off a bit.

Did you taper down your training adeqautely in the fortnight before the race?

sorry if I'm stating the obvious to an experienced runner

Well that you should... Actually,  I now keep snacks in my FANNY pack with my water bottle to help with those low energy runs. Really keeps my endurance up ;)
