I'd really appreciate any feedback or reassurance from anyone that might have some insight regarding the soreness in my thighs & calves.

I've been averaging 15-20 miles per week for the last 6 months or so and has started to do less frequent runs at longer distances (5-8 miles) 3-4 time per week.  My leg muscles really never got sore, it was just a matter a building some stamina during this time.  Then I got a summer cold/allergies/whatever and has to sit out for a week and a half.

I started back this week just running some 3 milers and I've struggled to make it the whole 3 miles and my leg muscles are really sore.

It's just weird that my legs have never really hurt, but now they are killing me every day... thoughts?

    Thanks,
    RD61

I saw your post and was hoping someone had some thoughts to share!  I've had almost the same issue! I just am starting back after a horrible sinus and ear infection. It has been 2 weeks since my last 6 mile long run, and I'm now way off track for my training for my first half marathon.  I cut a 3 mile run short this morning to just over 2 because I couldn't breath and my head started to pound.  A good friend of mine who ran 52 marathons last year always tells me some of the best runs are the ones you don't do when you're sick...but now I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to have to start back from scratch (which is what it felt like today) or if everything will come back faster once I'm back to feeling 100%.

With both of you, it's probaly just a case of getting out of routine; when you were running regularly, you casually built up your stamina, rythym, and your had your metabolism ticking over at a nice rate - having left off, albeit for a short period, you'll find that everything needs re-tuning.

You'll find that your legs won't stay sore and will be less stiff when you've run regularly for another week or so.  stick with it, treat yourself to an energy drink or two, try zinc tablets and sardines for lunch etc Foot in mouth
