    About three years ago I first started running and pushed myself way too hard and developed pain on the inside of my right leg near the joint.  At first I tried to work through it, but it became much worse.  I eventually stopped all exercise for a few months and it went away, but so did my drive to run.

    The last few months I have started running again and I have had no problems until this morning.  Yesterday I ran a normal run for me, about a minute/mile slower than my race pace for about 4.5 miles.  At about the three mile mark I noticed that my right thigh felt a little heavy, but I had no pain.  I had no further problems yesterday, but then when I woke up and got ready for my morning run this morning, I had the familiar pain in the inside of my right leg.  I abandoned my run and spent considerable time just stretching.

    Does anyone have any experience with this kind of injury?  I am really frustrated right now because I have been careful not to push myself too hard and I would hate to have to stop running for a while and then start completely over after this goes away.

    Hey roarke,

     I've been battling with the same kind of problem over the past year.  It got so bad last fall that I had to stop running for three months.  I went to a sports doctor to make sure I had no stress fractures, etc.  When tests came back fine, he recommended me to a physical therapist who specializes in hip problems in athletes.  The problem, for me, is biomechanics and posture, and is partly related to my high arches.  Essentially, I'm not using the correct muscles to do all the functions in the stride, and compensating with other muscles that become sore from overuse or "incorrect" use.  The therapist gave me several exercises from the Postural Restoration Institute that strengthen select muscles and teach me correct muscle function in all parts of the stride.  It has been 9 months since I started therapy and began running again...now I'm up to 35-40 mi/wk and have only occasional pain in the right adductor that I know how to treat with stretching and exercises.The therapist said that the problem was very common among runners.  She also said I'm likely to have a risk of this problem the rest of my life, but it is manageable with exercises, stretching, and (in my case) orthotics.

     Don't know if that helps, but I had good luck with my doc and therapist.  Good luck getting healthy!

    Thanks for the response.  I took about a week off of running and I've been paying a lot more attention to my stretching routine before running and it hasn't bothered me for the last couple of weeks.  I think I'll definitely hit up a sports doctor if it reappears.
