description: Big Bear Cafe (bigbearcafe-dc.com) to the National Zoo (open from 6am - 8pm). Go early, and it will be just you and the animals--you'll notice they actually pay attention to you and are more active, unlike during crowded times.

Water fountains at triangle park where 16th, Columbia, & Harvard collide (about the 2 1/4 mile mark and right after the climb out of the Zoo on the return trip) and about a quarter-mile into the Zoo (around the 3 mile mark).

Route: 1st St NE, climbing 300ft -> LEFT on Michigan (look up to see the National Cathedral) -> stay along the reservoir to get to Harvard St -> follow Harvard St all the way to the Zoo entrance (note: the street takes a turn to the right at the 16th st/Columbia/Harvard intersection--go through the park, past the water fountain, to get back onto Harvard)
